quick question

  RB 200 Cup!
Leaving my job very soon and need to take all my photos vids etc off my work comp and onto my laptop.

My usb stick is tiny and old and tbh quite fucked.

I have a network cable that i have used to connect to a mates laptop before - question is is it possible to just hook up my laptop to my work PC and just cut and paste my files across?

it can be done using ehternet you just gotta make sure the two things communicate.
get them on the same subnet and try pinging it, if they connect then use the wizard to transfer files.
Trust me though it would be sooooo much easier with a flash drive Tim

im not 100% sure if this is right but...

i am assuming: if you borrow that cable and connect the 2 pc's you'd have to make your 2 pc's in the same workgroup

but

if you have a server at work, your work pc will belong to a domain making that a pain in the backside for your IT guy to put back after (I know youre leaving but lets be considerate)

I would imagine your best bet is to bring your laptop in, ask your IT guy to give you the WPA access key to your wireless network and copy the files over using a network share.

tbf our network is shite and im the unofficial IT guy lol

wireless network - this is an office of old bids not used to such technology

think im gonna just ask any mates if they have a stick i can borrow

yeah i think we are on a peer to peer network?

i was just thinking of unplugging the network cable from the desktop and then putting in the one attached to the laptop and transfer it that way?

yeah you should get away with that.

you will have to right click on my computer and go to properties, click on computer name tab and change your computer name to something easy (like Timmay)

then do the same on your work pc and make sure the workgroup on the PC's are the same

next make a shared folder on your laptop

when that is up and running go to your work PC and click start>run> type '\\Timmay\Folder Name' (or whatever you called your \\computer\folder) and copy your files into it off your work pc.

I think that should work!!

If all else fails you can use your Gmail account as an FTP server and upload everything, but that could take a while depending on your connection.
