Rear end twitching over bumps...

  Suzuki Swift Sport
I have a feeling this maybe a characteristic of the clio - as my 172 did the same thing (197 didnt do it at all) but I have noticed the 182 tends to slightly skip sideways when I hit a sunken grate, or a pot hole / bump in the road. The front rides over it, and as soon as the back wheels hit it, it tends to skip sideways. Im not talking a noticeable or dangerous amount, just it can be felt slightly through the car.

Has anyone else experienced this, also whats the fix? It feels like a warn strut, however the car isnt bouncy or anything and is handling spot on. So im guessing the struts are fine (there is no evidence of any leaks)

The car is a 55 plate 182 with cup suspension, its done almost 30k.

Thanks

Nick

Saw this on Chop shop..think its called skitting and it happened on their car because the shocks didnt have much give in them.

I have a 2000 172 and i have exactly the same problem, never had a drama with the handling at all but this has been a problem since i got the car. it has done 80k though so im expecting to have to replace things at this point was thinking of going for coilovers as i may as well do the whole thing while im at it. any suggestions on an adjustable set that have been tried and tested?

  RSC 182 Cup
I've noticed the same thing with my 182 Cup - I even went to the extreme of pulling the rear shocks out and bench testing them in a vice by hand. I've got to say they are some of the hardest shocks I've ever tested, IMHO that could be part of the problem and cause the skipping.

BTW mine's done under 16000km.

Yeah my 182 Cup does it. Has done since I bought her with 16K on the clock. I reckon it's just on their traits.:S

I am only talking from experience as i had the EXACT same thing and it was leaky rear Dampers. If they were working as expected your car wouldnt skip.

Take it to Yozzasport

It's normal. More pronounced with leaky shocks, but you still get it with healthy dampers. It's one of the things that independent rear suspension solves.

I thought this might be the case, however the 197 didnt do it one bit - I imagine chassis technology has moved on a fair bit though with that car from the 182.

Its not something that detracts too much from the driving experience, although sometimes wonder what would happen if I hit a bump mid corner with the car loaded up!

All 5 of mine have, 2 of them from new. As said, more pronounced if the dampers are screwed. Easy to check the dampers, climb under the car with a torch, look for oil on the dampers. No need to take to a garage just to check them over.

the to of my dampers that broke never leaked, so just cos they aint leaking does not mean they are fine.

I mean it shouldnt twitch etc. The way he describes it reminds me of when i had my RB 182

Mines done this from new and at first it bothered me, but after a while I got used to it and it has never got any worse (touches wood :D).
Nothing to worry about IMO

^^ One of the best things ive done though you have cup packs so the difference might not be as pronounced.

Understeer maybe...fronts lose traction and you just go straight on.Ease off the throttle....or slow down ;)

I have two rear shocks if you fancied a loan to see if they make any difference Nick?

More than welcome to borrow them.

Had same problem was the dampers mate. Easy to spot though cos mine were leaking but they started being funny well before they leaked. Very easy to fit so could do it yourself.
