Red line/Rev Limiter.........

I know people have said before but what revs does the rev limiter kick in at. Isnt it set lower until the car warms up as well?

Anyone know that the top speed of a 172/182 in each gear is before hitting the limiter????? I aint hit the limiter yet and if I ever do I m sure I wont be watching the speedo that closely lol!

Yer its low at about 6300 ish rpm when not fully warm then its 7000 rpm .

When warm, i get the shift lift on at about 6,900rpm ish, and then the limiter kicks in about 7,200rpm.

Cant say ive really looked what speed in doing at the limit in each gear. I dont really drive that fastBut at a rough guess.

1st...no sure

2nd 62-65mph

3rd 85-90mph

4th not sure

5th not sure

Thats taking it to just before the limiter, ie when the ikkle green gear change light comes on. All indicated speeds.

Gear ratios were altered slighty for the 182, but the 172 Mk2 is

38 in first

62 in second

90 ish in third

112 in fourth

143 in fifth (theoretical)

Ratios for 182 are;

1st 5.4 mph / Thousand rpm = 39.25

2nd 8.9 mph / Thousand rpm = 64.25

3rd 12.5 mph / Thousand rpm = 90.65

4th 16.1 mph / Thousand rpm = 116.25

5th 20.9 mph / Thousand rpm = 151.25

Thats taking the rev limit as 7250 rpm. If thats what it is.

Now that would be nice!! I love fourth gear.

I hate changing into fifth when giving it some. Everything starts slowing down, it would be great to hold on to fourth for a few more rpm...

I asked Renault what the 172 rev limiter was and the reply was that with coolant temperature below 75 degrees c it was 6700 rpm all gears.

With coolant temp above 75 degrees c it is 7250 rpm on first, second and third, reducing to 7000 rpm on fourth and fifth (off beachy head I assume).

Only problem then is the temperature guage has no numbers on it, so god knows where 75 degrees is.

As for top speeds in each gear it depends whether you have mk1 or mk2 172.

mine seems to now have some sort of hybrid box as it goes to 126 before the limiter in 4th, all these speed tests were conducted on my very own test track btw

They were all pretty much to the limiter apart from 5th not sure what rpm that was.

yeh it still pulls in 5th around a ton at 4.5k not maxed it out yet but pulls as well as it did with the last box in and has defo got a longer ratio
