Refitting fuel tank

I've had the fuel tank out of my 172, is there a procedure to reconnecting it all to purge air out of the system or will that not be a problem?

Plug the connectors in, turn ign on a couple of times without starting to prime the fuel system and fire up. No need to purge anything.

One other question, the pump cover on my fuel tank was totally covered in road crap, should there be anything to seal it to the underside to prevent dirt getting on top?
