Refurbed laptop?

  Sunshine Bus ph-quick
are they any good?

My current one lasted about 6 months before it started playing up and 15 months after buying it, its ready to die I think.

Looking at refurbed vaio on play..
Whats the difference between refurbs and new aside from the facts its not 'new'.

how much is the cost difference from new?

tbh if it aint much, id just go with one from new with manufacturers warranty

ive bought a few macs and an ipod refurbed, it must only be the parts inside that are refurb as the 3 things ive had have been in brand new casing and came with full warranty

I work in the IT industry, so i'll chime in with my 2 cents.

Personally, if it were features you were after then I would look towards Acer, yes their customer service might be a bag of shite but the product is good. For £800 you'd get a cracking laptop. A good spec, and feature rich.

For reliability, then have a look at the Toshiba laptops. They have a moneyback guarantee that covers you for the life of the laptop. If you laptop dies / breaks not only will they repair it for free, under the warranty agreement but they'll give you your money back (ex-VAT) - Cant say fairer than that. Talk about confidence in your product.

Also, they have a cashback offer as well as a cashback offer for accessories purchased with them. I will have to double check whether that is just a business offer or open to consumers too.

Sony / HP / IBM are fine, and are good solid laptops, but, your paying for a badge. So if you've got cash to burn then buy one of those. IMHO, not worth the money.

Dell is the devils work, avoid at all costs. Complete crap.

Ultimately though, buying a laptop is like buying a car. Its very subjective, what exactly do you want to do with it, and whats the budget?

I'm i'll find a deal for you ;)

Good post mate! I am with you on Acer being excellent for the money unbeatable really. Toshiba ARE indeed workhorses and offer great customer support.

I am not a fan of Dell however I know a LOT of people who never have a problem with them. When it comes to Dells cheap base units. s**t doesnt begin ti explain them, its like they are programmed to implode 13 months after purchase. The amount of year or so old Dells we have come through the workshop is staggering all of course with virtually unreplacable connecters and parts.

Great post by Stockbroker!

Acer are awesome price wise. I've just advised a friend on a laptop, went with a toshiba in the end.

I wouldn't buy a refurb, personally, the price difference just isn't that great..

Ah.... heard some great stories about Dell. The best, is a friend who was at a big conference showcasing some HP kit. They had 10 x HP PCs and 10 x Dell PCs, each respective model was the same for all 10. The units were fully sealed and customers were invited to check the seals on all boxes.

After lunch they were all opened. The HP desktops, as expected, had the same components in throughout each box. The Dell units on the other hand had pretty much different manufacturers for memory, hard drives, motherboard, fans etc...

I would, but only directly from the manufacturer themselves. Its the only way you can guarantee that it has been refurb'd properly. Plus, in line with the new WEEE directive - no, not from Nintendo, but the EU (I believe?!) - they are under increasing pressure to refurb and recycle more. As a result they often provide incentives, such as full warranties as if new.

That's a little different, if it's coming from a manufacturer you are assured quality and given a guarentee with it..when you get websites and shops offering refurbs, I wouldn't be interested. WEEE directive is interesting.

WEEE directive is a fecking ball ache and costs Indies a fortune. I am still trying to get my head around it
