Relax....it’s a Rover

So the time came to return my company Audi A4 and for 12 months I would need to run my own car again. So, in theory I needed something diesel, German with all the mod cons. However........

I have been wanting this car for over 5 years. My dad used to work for Rover for over 30 years and in that time brought a whole load of different stuff home. From Rover SD1 Vitesses to prototype 200 Tomcat turbos running 250bhp. Before MG River finally closed its doors they spent in excess of £30 million re-engineering the Rover 75 chassis to create what I think will become a cult classic in 10 or so years time.

So here it is:

2005 MG ZT 260. 45k miles, full main dealer service history. This thing has been loved and cherished by its previous owner. The folder of receipts is amazing (just finished spreadsheeting it all). It has a few mods such as K & N filter and Zero exhausts which sound epic.

For those unaware Rover converted the original MG ZT chassis from FWD to RWD which involved considerable underbody reconstruction, totally new steering rack, 6 point rear subframe, bespoke heating, cooling and braking systems. The heart of this car though is the 4.6 ltr, SOHC Mustang V8 under the bonnet. This engine, in modern terms is absolute shite. Heavy, thirsty and a pain to extract NA power from. However they can take big power and the Tremec gearbox and Dana Diff can handle 500 + bhp no problem. Most people have used Superchargers to get around 420 bhp out of them which the chassis seems to handle with ease (Dreadnought did a lot of conversions and they used to be the company which helped with the racecar projects at MG Rover) Which brings me on to the plans for it:

In 2003 Rover wanted to take on the E39 BMW M5 and created a prototype ZT V8 with 500 bhp and began showing it various shows

The production version was going to have 385 bhp and be less than £40k. Of course this never came to fruition and Rover went into administration. When MG Sport and Racing’s assets got sold off in 2006 there were 2 cars that they had created for racing and the below car is what I hope to create exterior wise for my car.

This car is now in Australia being raced. There is a company in Yorkshire that took moulds of the original body kit and I have booked in to have this fitted this year. Below is a photo of their demonstrator (Vectra VXR wheels in case anyone is stumped)

I will be having custom wheels made in the BBS LM style deep dished and have the original rear spoiler put on (from a ZS hatch).

Anyway. I’ve had it a few months now. Replaced from and rear discs and pads as they were shocking. There are loads of things that are annoying like the ridiculously heavy clutch, nowhere to put your left leg, useless climate control, dog s**t sat Nav the list goes on. But I don’t care about any of it because every time I drive it, it makes me smile. It is not by any means quick (my clio would destroy it in a straight line) but the noise it makes and the drive makes it such an event. I am in love with it.....and so will the Shell CEO when I start using it every day for work. I will keep this updated as and when the real modifications begin. I also have loads of library photos of the prototype cars if anyone is interested.

Awesome. Always had a strange feeling about these. Not sure if I like them or not but I appreciate something different to the norm and your plans sound good. What’s the output of it as it stands? Couldn’t see in your op

Love it. Father in law was a rover man, I went with him to drop the company car off when it all went tits up. The factory gates had an atmosphere like a funeral.

The zt was a cracking car to drive. Imagine the V8 is great fun.

I did exactly the same with my old man. Horrible day, eeerily quiet and a sad day for British car manufacturing.

It’s brilliant to drive mate. Superb chassis. Traction control is hilarious. Literally a fuel cut off, quite dangerous to be honest....so I just turn it off and skid around

A whole.......256 bhp. So not a lot as the car weighs 1660 kgs. 200 kgs heavier than a normal ZT V6. You can put a few bolts ons like a larger throttle body and manifolds then add Cams and get around 300 ish. Best route is Supercharging. You can achieve 400 - 450bhp on standard internals and the chassis copes fine.

Saw a Rover 25 parked outside our flat last weekend and said Yuck outloud and then stood there looking at it for a while. It's actually aged very well.

V8 RWD sounds good too. Does it have a locking diff? Supercharger sounds fun but you're meant to be using this for work??

Always had a soft spot for these. Such an oddball but just part of the appeal. Do prefer the pre-facelift myself, but still awesome. A friend had a 190 and we did a track day in it for a giggle. It wallowed around, felt very heavy and really wasn't very fast at all, but it was good fun.

I think they can be ace when set up properly. Only trouble is nobody makes suspension for them such as coilovers which I would love to fit. The issues with lowering them is that the sump is really low due the size of the engine. The race cars had bespoke Bilstein 3 way remote reservoir dampers so may need to speak to them about specs.

It has a hydratrak LSD which has been rebuilt by a TVR specialist on mine. Supercharger will be fun but only after i get my company car back in a year after i’ve finished this secondment for work. Will have the wide arch kit and wheels fitted first jobs.

Yeah my dad had ZT 190’s as company cars and I thought they were slow as s**t back then ha ha. The V8 is fast enough but is a bit all mouth and no trousers at the moment. Will be remedied in time though

No, in all seriousness, fair play for putting money into one of these at this stage of it's life, i guess they're in a limbo stage now between not cool enough to be a classic but still relatively rare. In about 20 years time will probably be worth a fortune..

Always been interested in how these drove would be a interesting daily apart from the MPG it probably gets is terrible. Always wanted a ZS 180 or ZT for abit.

I had an mg zr 160 years a go, it was what it was, i loved it at the time, my mate had a rover 220 coupe turbo which i loved, i used to prey he would write it off just so i could buy his engine and do a swap!

Silly cheap entry to rear-drive V8 joy. Just boot out the back boxes :)

I too had a ZR 160, but only for about 4 months before Renault Boston took it in as part-ex..... after I'd done a pre-inspection de-mayoing of the oil filler.... as of course is K-series tradition.

Such a handsome thing.
Had a black ZS 180 saloon, facelifted like that one with the arch extensions and big whale tail. It got keyed 2 days after I got it. Sad day when I had to drive it into Longbridge and hand some guy with a clipboard the keys with everyone else.

One of the most neutral chassis i’ve Ever come across. Pick of the MG range in terms of enjoyment IMO.

Ha ha. They made 883 of them with most being the MK2 version. Decent examples were about £6.5 - 7k about 2 years ago. They’re hovering around £10k now so I thought i’d better get one before I would begrudge ripping one apart rather than keeping it original.

Yeah MPG is comedic mate. I managed 265 miles to a tank before the light went on this morning and 200 of those miles were doing a steady cruise on the M6. Heavy footed driving I would expect to get just over 200 miles.

£10k isn't exactly cheap, there's plenty of E55's less than that.

Clearly it's already appreciating for the enthusiasts.

My mate had one of those with the 2.0 turbo in it. Was a right laugh! Until you slid out the seats at every bend

There was one of these at oulton a while back. It was silly loud. They were told to put a silencer on which still wasn’t good enough. So they put a new exhaust on and still had to silence that lol. f**k knows what they had done to it but it sounded hilarious

Weren’t these developed by Prodrive? Or did they have something to do with the race ones? Sure my brother said he saw one there when he was at work experience with them about 15 years ago.

Prodrive would have helped with the race ones I'm sure.

Whether or not they helped with the model development - you might find conflicting information online, it's not like the actual company is around to make an official statement.

There's someone local to me with one, it only turns a wheel a few times a year so I've never heard it. I must admit I was a little disappointed when I found out it was only 260bhp.

Is it the same engine they used for the SV? That was a mental car.
