Removing gear gaitor & knob

How do you get this off? I have unclipped the gaitor fron the bottom but how do I get the new on on?

Does it need to go over the gear knob? (Because it won't)

How do I get that off too?

Unclip the gear gaitor from the bottom and pull up over the gear knob so it's inside out and you will see either a cable tie or string, just under the gear knob cut or undo that and the gaitor slides over the knob. As for the know hacksaw I'm afraid.

Only thing is, the new gaitor doesn't fit over the gear knob...fml
