Removing spanner from bottom of engine bay???

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Dropped the bugger while reconnecting the battery, I know it fell on the panel underneath the engine because I could see but moved it out of sight trying to get to it.

What's the best way to get it out? And sitting at the bottom its not dangerous is it?

vish mate, what have you done lol, need hands of a 3 year old to get it back or a telescopic magnet, best thing you can have when working in the sport engine bays ;), or just remove the skid/wind pannel from under neath and grab the fooker!

I was seriously scared of putting my hands in the bay and not being able to get them out again. Wiring up my amp, was 2 minutes from finishing, spent fooking ages trying to get that spanner.

Is the bottom panel easy to come off? I've only got the standard wheel jack, dangerous to take it off while jacked up on that?

about 6 10mm bolts iirc, should be able to do without jacking up, iv done it before without jacking :)

Just 4 10mm bolts. You could maybe do it with the car not on the jack even.

I would not even put my little finger under the car if it was on the Reno jack. I heard someone call it the widow maker the other day lol!

You could take a wheel off and put that under the car so it couldn't fall on you if you are stuck for a decent jack or stands.

have you not go any axle stands??
or anything that would take the weight??
those jacks are for changing wheels only lol,

my mate put a stack of newspapers under his car,
but wood or anything that wont crush will do fine

Cheers guys, will give it a try tomorrow. If not enough time, is it dangerous to leave it there for a couple of days?

No axel stands. So anything strong enough to take the weight will be ok underneath? Just place it near the jack point?

Dan, will call you if I have problems and not too dark. Cheers buddy.

James, the amp does add weight but think I saved some on the HU ;) The standard HU seemed suprisingly heavy when I took it out. Can't compensate for the sub though :(

I Just dont wanna know! :rasp:

lol if it was a cup, I wouldn't even dream of a sub.

Easy to take out though when I start doing track days though :)

Did give that a quick try over the little brick bumps you get in a cul-de-sac but apparently I was "being too gentle". Never give my car abuse over any bumps so it was hard for me lol

i dropped a spanner in my 106 bay before and totally forgot it. driving down the road to work later on and i heard a clunk. low and behold a spanner on the road :)

You really dont need to jack the car up to remove the undertray. Just 4 10mm bolts and it'll come off. Takes 5 minutes max.

I done this with a Silvertec bulb! Can't believe it didn't smash tbh.

I just found someone with really long arms :rasp: got there in the end lol...

Good luck!

Got it out! Cheers guys!

Parked it with just the wheels on a curb, and was plenty of space for my dad. Only asked for advice, and next thing I know he's under the car with a spanner lol

Unscrewed 3 bolts, unclipped one side and the spanner fell out. Saved me a couple quid for buying a new one :)

Cheers!

Bet he was doing some welding too? Thats 3rd degree mental at its best haha

Another tip for quick retrieving of lost items in the engine bay, buy a telescopic magnet. Sell them in the pound shop
