Rep Mobiles > 1*2?

Thinking about getting a 172/182, how do they fare against business men in their dirty dervs?

Would love to see the look on their faces as I go past ... in a Clio :)

Most Rep mobiles are probably faster, better built and comfier.

Diesel Torque!

Not as fun though..

Better than the average but there are some of course that would hand you your arse on a plate!

I have to disagree on the faster or comfy bit but better built yes!

By talking rep mobile i think of Mondeos, Vectras, Passhats etc where none of which in standard form are that cracking in either the speed or comfort department imo!

My old boy has had a Ghia X Mond TDI for a few years now with all the kit (leathers, built in satnav etc) what i used to travel to work in with him (60 mile each way) and i would rather be in my Clio on a Motorway!

Cars like the highest powered Mazda 6 on the other hand would be a different story.....

Aberdeen reps in 3.0 diesels maybe...

But a 172/182 will destroy all popular rep mobiles in terms of acceleration and chuckability.

The 172 is a little more stealthy than the 182 and it always surprises people I find lol

What about Audi S3, 2.0 Golf TDI's ? Guess you don't stand a chance against them :dapprove:

  LY 200
^LOL - Have you been sent on a mission here my friend? ;)

In standard form those lumps (which weigh two tonne) will still not stand a chance imo.

I've had blags with various Golf GTi's in time and even with the latest there is nothing between it and the 182 so you can draw your own conclusion from there really.

All the models you mention have higher powered versions that would probably toast a 1*2

^You must but fact is most reps/companys need cars that give good fuel consumption.....The 3.0 V6's i take it your on about would give early 30's at best!

No. Most big diesel lumps will have enough tourqe to pull away from a 1*2 and still return decent fuel consumption.

  LY 200
Haha yes when talking bug BMW, Audis etc but what about when talking the manufacturers i was talking about!?

I didnt realise they did the bigger diesel lumps?

  LY 200
^Yes but even those are not going to pull a way from a 182 (well not a good one anyway) like you say!

You can go on all day about these diesels with similar power and loads of torque but fact is they all weigh two tonne when in comparison our cars weigh f**k all!

As said we have 2.0 tdi Ghia X in our household and the standard 2.0 Zetec petrol engine we had before pulled better than it.

In a straight line some of them will give a 1*2 a run for its money. Ok it wont slaughter it, but the 1*2 wont pull much ahead.

I do however agree about the 2.0 tdi Mondeo they are sluggish the newer spec tdci etc are far better.

Any of the diesel rep mobiles with circa 170 bhp will easily hang with a Clio sport once moving and on a motorway and there are plenty of them. They may weigh more but they can have up to twice the torque of a Clio.

Other than that, as said, the Clio will be more fun and quicker off the mark. The rep mobiles are much better for cruising along the highway in terms of comfort and no hassle acceleration. The Clio needs to be revved to move at these speeds and still, not a lot happens.

Once you get to the 3 litre diesels, like the BMW and Audi's, the Clio will get toasted! And there are plenty of them around too.

To be fair you've well and truly contradicted yourself as first of all you said these diesels would 'pull away from the 1*2' (as per below quote) and now your saying 1*2's wont pull much ahead which is a bit of a difference!?

I have never denied that some will hang on once moving but that wasnt what the chap was asking at a guess and some people were implying the 1*2's would get toasted which isnt the case!

I drove a Passat Tdi hire car once, tbh the thing was pretty nippy, not break neck fast (obvioulsy) but on boost (as I was all the time as I drove it like a hero) it wasn't bad.

I could never understand why rep mobile drivers always like sitting up peoples backsides on the motorway etc, until I took it out. If I wanted a big barge of a diesel car i'd have one.
I dread to think how quick (for an normal car) and how much torque something like a 330 derv has, i'd consider one if I had to commute daily.

Sorry i didnt make myself clear, however you will notice in the 2nd quote that i refer to "Most big diesel lumps" ie: the 2.2 diesels and the 3.0v6 diesels. In the 1st quote i belive we had moved the convo back towards the 2.0 diesels with 170 + Bhp output.

Hence the two different replys i give.

At the end of the day, these massive V6 rep mobiles cost how much? And the sh*tbox Clio costs how much? Even keeping up with them is good for the money they cost, and will undoubtedly piss off the tw@t inside,

Not everyone on the road is out to prove a point. Some people will in fact laugh at the pleb in the Clio trying to race them.

This was not directed at you, but as you are on the defensive, how do you know what the guy meant with his "I wonder how a 1*2 would fare against men in their dirty dervs?" question? The chap did not mention any type of situation. The fact is, the most common situation where people try it on when on the move and there wouldn't be much in it.

I understand this, the OP is clearly concerned that the rep's will get away from him in his sh*tbox, hence my response.

Who really cares? Totally different caliber of cars so not even worth comparing them.

Clio RS is a good car for what it was designed for: a cheap car that has a bit of poke.

The Clio's arn't supercars. They're nippy but have little torque, you need to be above 5K to get anywhere quickly. Above 5K they do move though.

In reality, point to point a decent barge is just as quick. However find me a diesel barge that will keep up with my 172 for the same price and running costs?

  Clio 1970000000
If you want to drive up and down the motorway, why would you buy a RS Clio? Rep mobiles are designed for cruising and overtaking on the motorway hence the huge torque and lack of concern over weight.

What roads do you drive on? Better to talk about rep mobiles on twisties than Clios on motorways.

It seems the guy who posted the thread cares. So to him, it seems it is worth comparing them.

+1, the 170 golf GTdi doesn't seem slow. Been wounded a couple of times by my mate in his-they certainly have a fair whack of torque in gear :dead:

The 170 Golf is rapid! I was looking at these so managed to get a drive in one. It would have no problem with a Cliosupersport. However, they are not worth circa £20,000!
