Retarded noob question...

I want to download some songs and apps on itunes for my iphone, do I need to have the iphone plugged in and registered, or do the apps just get downloaded to my itunes, and then I can sync them to my iphone 4 tomorrow (when it arrives)

Why not just wait till you get the phone? Don't think I've ever used iTunes to download an app
