buying an Xbox from a friend, he has told me it has done an E74 error once, reset it and it was fine after that, it was showing one red light

im wondering which of the kits online do i buy to prevent 3 red lights/it happening again

its out of the time that MS will fix them for free, and its cheap enough

Excuse me if I'm out of date as Ive not been that into the stuff for 2/3 years now.

Quite certain the only prevention is abit of luck and good ventilation.

If you got a new one it'd prob have the update jasper(or whatever they were) boards and the warranty which is better off IMO.

well my own Xbox isnt that old and is an Elite of the newer ones, so i shouldnt have any problems with my own

this is actually for the g/f's dad as its cheap enough to have a go with and having played Fifa 11 over the weekend he wants one himself

well from what im reading now it seems to be an overheating issue ???

if so surely if its kept cool, and maybe with the addition of some thermal paste under the heatsinks then my chances are better

Had mine repaired a couple of months ago by a friend who works for Yamaha electronics. Apparently is's a combination of both heat and the uneven clamping thing so when it gets hot the soldering breaks or moves or something due to the board being under too much tension. He got X clamps for mine off ebay

Its nigh on impossible to stop a unit overheating. It was just a VERY bad design flaw with the xclamps and airflow inside the unit.

Even if you were to stop it overheating there is still enough heat being generated that overtime would cause these dry joints on the CPU/GPU due to how the clamping works and PCB flex.
