I dont think the gear box is know as a common fault. If you drive your clio normally and service it you should be fine.

no issues as yet for me

I have noticed when changing from 4th or 5th down to 3rd, sometimes it just won't go in

but I now always blip the throttle to match the revs anyway so it isn't a problem, except when you granny driving and just can't be assed, you have to push it to 3rd, then push again, then it'll just go in

mine went at 40k. i didn't replace it myself and was told that something had friction welded itself to something else. it seized anyway. suspected cause was in the box having been run low on oil by a prev owner (unknown by me). they do have a reputation for leaking from the selector shaft and the n/s (i think) diff end oil seal. will be keeping a keen eye on mine for leaks anyway!

mine's been rebuilt and i still don't like it. it's not a nice gearbox

I fail at double clutching if my understanding of it is correct (little off topic sorry)

all I know of it is for example you gun it 1st,2nd,3rd, and for each change you select neutral let the clutch up then go back on the clutch and into desired gear?

I always try to match the revs when dropping gears.. especially when driving enthusiastically

heel to toe is difficult for me - small feet lol

i also find this :( does it mean gearbox on way out?

no need to double declutch (there hasn't been in cars for about 50 years) - you're just torturing yourself

could blip the throttle to match revs to the those of the lower gear whilst downshifting though

the reason I asked the question is that before I bought my ph1 172 I went and looked at many other 172s and quite a lot of cups most I went to see had a receipt for a replacement gearbox. Must be a very common problem

Which is the best box ph1 or ph2?? Or apart from the longer gearing in the ph1 are the casing pretty much identical?

are there any run up symtoms to failing gearbox?

my 3rd thing sound suspicious?

they are incredibly expensive to buy and fit so I am HOPING this isn't the case. :(

from what I've researched the shift action between gears should be smooth with no crunching, assuming the clutch is also in good condition.

When it starts jumping out of gear, especially 3rd gear it's not a good sign!!!!!

i'd not worry too much about the gearbox - all you can do is periodically check for leaks, ensure your engine mounts are 'good' (the std ones are rubbish, even when new imo - but worn mounts will contribute to wear in the gearbox), and drive the car considerately

mine's been completely rebuilt and still occasionally crunches from second into third if you hurry it. it's just not up to much as gearboxes go

mines on 117k now and OEM box still no probs, slight crunch when quick shifting to 3rd but this is prob due to the mounts as they are a bit soft now.

i have a 52 plate 172 on 53k now and 3rd gear (as mentioned many times in this thread already) is abit dodgy, crunchy to drop into from 4th or 5th :(

how much are gearboxes to replace?

mines also gone, any idea what it will cost to get sorted? My cambelt is due next summer, will having the belt done whilst the gearbox is out reduce the overall cost?

  Whichever has fuel
There's a guy on here with 120k on his and he's on the same box.

Russ16v iirc.

  ibiza cupra
mines a ph2 51 plate 172 with 103,500 miles on it with the original box and apart from the odd clunk here and there it is sweet.

My 1.6's gearbox is on 135k
It wont select 1st if you arent at a stand-still, I struggle to find second, third is ropey on the up change, it goes into position 6 even though there is no 6th gear?!

Apart from that its all gravy baby:cool:

I think my engine mounts are on their way out, expensive?

no problem with the boxes if you behave with them, my 172 takes hard abuse every day and has been fine for 2 years running 190bhp+

when i was a harsh 17yr old i trashed a 1.2 box! but it was on 140k!!

My JB3 gave up on 52k. Still drove fine but it was rattly as fook in neutral.

I don't agree, my 172 with the 2 brand new spankers in where awful and notchy, as is my 182 when i got it on 12k and still is on 23k.
