  clio rs 2000
i have paid 400£ only for revision
in turkey the parts are very expensive
and you cant find the spare parts or rs
may be only 50 172's are in turkey
we cant find a second hand input shaft:(

When I got my cup on 73k, I had it a week before mine started making funny noises. Got it to a gearbox specialist, paid for by the garage that sold it to me for them to say that the bearings had gone. Not sure what that meant but when I went to pick up the car, the bill for the garage was £900 and the guy said that they rebuilt the gearbox and replaced everything that needed doing. Havent had a problem to this day since then! I guess if they get used in a considerate way, there should be no problems with them, its only the chavvies that thrash it through the gears not using the clutch that kills them!

Only problem I have with mine is that there's no 6th gear. It'd make motorway journeys a hell of a lot quieter!

I've concluded that they are s**t.

Mine was fine up until the snow, trying to get up a steep hill repeatedly and failing took it's toll, 1st gear whines a bit. No crunching on gear changes though so the synchros are fine. Sounds like input shaft bearings are a bit worn though. I'm just leaving it until it goes and i'll do the clutch while i'm at it. Probably got a few more years life in it if i'm nice to it, which i am lol

i am driving the car for know because we opened 6 times the gearbox but cant fix the little ticky sound on idle
we think it ws from input shaft and may be its lower bearing
we check it on cnc and turned the input shaft 2000 tr/min
there was a %4-5 shaking on comperator
if you check yours may be i can thing to buy

Yep.
Had the n/s drive shaft seal changed, had a selector seal kit. I think it still leaks gearbox oil. Its not a great gearbox anyway, worst bit in the car imo, its on the same level as the 'box in my old J reg astra, much prefer the gearbox in my Zetec S.

  Monaco RS Clio 172
even the gearbox in my escort gti was faultless and that suffered EXTREME abuse to make the car go anywhere

renault just failed. badly.

  clio sport cup
my ph1 172 died, was not happy for about 15k miles.. crunchy going into 3rd at high rpm.
the cup (on 68k) is all ok at the mo, thou sometimes (when cold) doesn't want to go into 3rd straight away, it goes in, but a little more resisent than normal.. However i look for these things now... :)

  Ph1
Modded engine, over 110k on the original box and no problems. Was a little notchy a while back but this was to do with a slightly different grade of oil we put in.

If you stick the correct grade of oil in, use the clutch ;) and dont do harsh shift downs then their fine.

  Weeman sucks ****
mine's done 120,000 miles now *touches wood*.

80 odd laps of the nordschliefe, outlon park, bedford x4, brands x3. changed the oil once and it's fine. had a problem with getting into 3rd on track about 60,000 miles ago but that's gone now.

  clio rs 2000
ok look at this it is in the circle and it is a whole part
the upper bearing is on it
but the bearing which is under it is not there in the picture
there must be a renault number on it if you look at that we can match it
because there are lots of versions of it

mines a y reg mk2 ph2 on 50k, thinks its still on orginal box.

1st is a bit crunchy when changin down from speed, its fine when stopped

I think most gearboxes don't like being changed into 1st unless stopped - I can't remember a single instance when I've ever needed to go BACK to 1st though whilst already moving.

^ i do that in mine a fair bit in traffic; seems fine if you blip the throttle whilst shifting. i still haven't upgraded them, but am hoping that a lot of these shift problems will be eased with decent engine mounts - the whole lot just flaps about too much and there are no steady rods for the gear linkage

no, although i'm thinking it's a contributory factor in some of the problems - mainly shift action. also, if you think about problems like the oil leaks they develop - they'll be promoted by movement in the powerplant

107,000 miles on mine, shifts very smoothly with no resistance or notchiness. Never had even the slightest sense that it wasn't working anything other than 100%.

Heel and toe FTW.

  Clio RS 172
157.000km and gearbox whines constantly when moving.
started 3.000km ago, and I allways use clutch etc.

Gearboxes are the weak part of most fwd cars. Its not just specific to renault.
I`ve had other cars before the 172 cup and people moan about gearbox problems the same!
Keep your oil full in your box and take care with your gear changes and you should have no problems. I`m on 86k on my 172 cup and no problems with the gearbox. It also depends on previous drivers, how they treated the gbox.

  2001 172
I disagree, Renaults are definately renownd for it, more so the performance cars. Renault 5, 16v clio, 19's. All hurrendous gearboxes. you only had to sneeze and you needed a rebuild.

Heel and toe FTW.

This is a big point, even simple rev matching if you can't heel toe.

It removes all sudden loading and juddery vibrations of an unmatched shift being transmitted through the whole drivetrain.

Another point imo is taking your time through the shifts, a clean solid shift every time will certainly help.

You have to put the right oil in the gearbox, that is Tranself NFJ75W 80. Some friends report that puting the recommended Castrol oil in the car created problems with shifting. Hard to get the gears in at high revs for example.

Only problem I had is an oil leak after rebuilding the gearbox fitting a Quaife ATB. :( Probably the in-going shaft seal that was damaged during assembly. Offcause I discovered this when the gearbox was back in the car :dead:

Leason learned: always fill the gearbox up with oil on a workbench before mounting it in the car, spin axels, leave it for a couple of hours, check for leaks, drain oil, mount in the car, fill oil back in, look happy. Would have saved me a lot of work thats for sure.
