RS Tuner 98 Ron review

Hey all just thought I'd put my thoughts up on this as it's been on a week now.
First off I was sceptical and thought it wouldn't really make much difference on the 182 as only so much power you can gain but I was looking at it totally wrong. It's not about the power increase its the way it gets the power on earlier and smoother. The difference was noticeable straight away from the perfect idle and it's totally transformed the drive of it. Ive had 3 172's and now the 182 cup and without a doubt it's the nicest to drive out of all of them.
In short it idles spot on, low down torque is much more noticeable and I still have the 5k kick too which I wasn't expecting either. The difference is honestly night and day, it's just a much much nicer car to drive all round and the increased torque makes it much more nimble when not gunning it.
If your unsure or undecided on doing this them just go for it I promise you that you'll be glad you did :)

This sound spot on.

How much does this cost? Does it need done at a certain place or can any tuner get it done? It's pretty new to me!

Im guessing I'm better waiting till I have my new exhaust fitted ?

it's a diy job, buy a used rstuner box off here then buy a licence and map off the fastuner site, really easy and really works :)

When it comes to ecus and reprogramming that doesn't sound really easy :(

Will need to do my home work I think

Thank you for the review.

I'll buy the RSTuner off of www.fastchip.nl by the end of the month.
I've heard it also improves cold starts a lot and although I don't exactly have troubles starting at the moment, it could be nice to have a smoother idle when the temperature drops even further.

Quick question though, is it really worth getting the Pro box over the standard one or any of the modules they offer?

Be aware that flashing your ECU ties it to using an RSTuner box (VCI) to upload new maps forever more. Not a problem unless you will desire/require a custom tune in the future (e.g. you fit aftermarket cams), but you should be aware of it beforehand. I was unaware and it was a serious ballache for me to discover this later down the line.

Don't let that put you off though, if you're certain you'll never mess around with those things, then the 98Ron map is well worth it. The box is a useful diagnostics tool afterwards as well, or you can sell it on to recuperate some of the outlay. Pound for pound (as long as you won't need custom tuning) it's a very good mod.

IMO, you don't need the pro box if you just plan to flash and run basic diagnostics checks.

Henk can supply you with a custom tune if/when you go for cams or similar down the line, no?

Aside from paying the £120 (or whatever price you end up getting it for) for the RSTuner, what are the other costs for the map?

Nope, he told me to go to a custom tuner to get my 428's mapped. I went to both MWM and SJM, neither could get access to the ECU, because the firmware RSTuner updates with (at least more recently) encrypts/locks the ECU so that RSTuner VCI's are the ONLY way you can upload new map files. Obviously, there are few (if any) tuners out there who would use this method over the equipment that they have been using for years and years, or be interested in either learning/buying any relevant license(s) or equipment from FastChip just to do so for such a niche market.

In the end I had to swap my ECU/UCH/Key fobs for a second hand set.

At no point does the FastChip website (or Henk) actually tell you that this is this case either, nor was it written or communicated in either the manual, FAQ or anywhere on the FastChip website (at least when I was dealing with the issue), which is why I am telling you now!

Around £70ish in total for a license to unlock the box (VCI) and purchase a map file.

Thank you very much, chaski.

I'm a bit worried about that whole locked ECU ordeal though. Makes me reconsider if it's actually worth it.
Now I doubt I would go cams in the near future or ever but knowing that you'll have to replace the ECU, UCH and keys just for a new map sounds absolutely idiotic and is in my book a huge turnoff.
Just coding new keys would be more than the RSTuner itself for god's sake. Not to speak of the price of a new ECU...

Thanks once again for the heads up. I'm surprised this tiny bit of info hasn't been more acknowledged. Wonder how many actually knew about it.

No problem mate. I only share my first hand experiences. I am amazed that the info is not more widely acknowledged. I know that older versions of RSTuner maps were not locked, so that may be the reason why. The product (and 98Ron map) is good, it's just an important piece of information everyone should know and consider before they go down that route.

are you sure thats right? As you can restore your original backup which resets the software versions and offsets etc? Sounds like you didnt restore you original backup first...

I'm fairly sure, but I'm happy to be entirely wrong, if only for everyone who's busy flashing their ECUs and being unaware's sake. I've built my own computers, flashed my previous android phones with third party/developer ROMs for years and always updated/reverted firmware on all my devices with no issue.

I asked Henk for his advice numerous times which was a rather fruitless endeavour if I'm honest and tried re-flashing my backed up files numerous times as well as going to both MWM and Dan@SJM.

If that's the case, then really there should be a warning before you start the flash to let you know this. I know I dont have any problems using my ELM327 after using the RSTuner though. Like I said, I will have a god tomorrow if my galletto comes  hopefully shed some light on this!

I'm truly happy to be wrong, but as I say I tried to restore my files numerous times to no avail. I will go into this in further detail and it's not perhaps as black and white as I have intimated and I want to be expressly clear/transparent and us unbiased as I possibly can. At this point, I'd like to highlight that I think my previous posts (here and in other topics) have simply tried to balance the negative consequences with the good ones. There is very little said about RS Tuner on this forum, other than advice about how to use it and the (rightly so) positive reviews of its performance and value for money. I am very much not the only person to have had problems though and problems with it are little if ever discussed. There are both threads here and on other forums and I've spoken to a couple of people who have heard of the same issue rearing its head elsewhere.

Frankly, Henk was less than forth coming with software files or any method for me to resolve the situation in a manor which would result in a completely unlocked (free from RSTuner) ECU without using a third party other than myself. He did however press me to go and use tuners with which he has a business relationship. Most of which would simply write their calibration to the ECU using the RS Tuner. I don't personally have any tuning software or the experience to use it, so I cannot comment with regard to the technical ease (or even possibility) of creating the appropriate calibration file to use with the RS Tuner. Either way, funnily enough I had already been to one of the tuners he recommended and they could not access the ECU at all. Hypothetically, if it had actually worked the end result would have been an incredibly limited choice of tuner and I'm still stuck with an ECU that requires the RSTuner to tune and consequently I'm tied to a very small list of people which will no doubt diminish further over time. It's also worth mentioning that I was told my ECU was sent (by a recognised RS specialist) to be reset by another specialist, after he could not gain access to the ECU himself. The ECU came back and could not be reset by them.

I concede that I did not follow up Henk's only proposed solution, which was to go to well known specialist in Leeds whom he claimed can fully reset the ECU. Whether they would or could completely remove the RSTuner software I do not know, as I didn't pursue it for a number of reasons:

  1. It would cost me equal or more than just replacing the ECU/UCH/Keys in fuel and labour.
  2. I disagree on principal that I should be forced to either use them for mapping (however good they are), or fork out yet more fuel and more labour to be able to use my choice of tuner and thus making it incredibly expensive in the process.
  3. If I were to have had the car mapped in Leeds then I would either need to pay for a hotel, or have the car badly mapped. How could they possibly do a good custom tune including both up to temp and cold start in just a single day without costing me a fortune in labour.

I don't consider the offered solution to my problem either reasonable or acceptable, on the basis that I was not made aware of these consequences in advance at any time, regardless of the fact Henk claims it says so in an email confirmation (it didn't). I had no contact with the specialist in Leeds at all, so please don't anyone think I am inferring any wrong doing or negativity towards them.

I'd be very interested to hear what you find Fatty! Genuinely, the ideal out come is that you will be able to both prove it can be done and hopefully provide an easy method. The key here in my opinion is that being technically possible is not a real solution. A real solution is one that is both viable in money and ease. It would save a lot of ball ache, stress and money no doubt for someone further down the line and frankly it would fill the void that Henk has created (in my opinion quite deliberately to suit his business agenda).

Also... If the solution is simple and easy then Henk would know this, as he knows his product better than anyone else.

In that case why would he be reluctant to share, inform or develop a method by which to do it whilst still protecting his intellectual property (the maps and software).

@chaski when you say they couldn't gain access, does that include read access? i.e. they couldn't connect at all?

I believe so yeah. Certainly the first tuner I went to couldn't read the ECU at all. I wasn't physically there the second time, as my alternator died the day I was supposed to drop it off, so in the end it was dropped off by the AA on a trailer. I obviously wasn't present when the second tuner sent it to yet another specialist either.

Ok thats fine then, my test wont be a waste of time as I am only looking to read with the galletto at the moment (not brave enough to write)! :)

Sounds similar to what the likes of revo and apr do/use to do on the older Bosch me ecu's on VAG's.

I would have thought removing the eprom and re-writing an original file would solve the issue.

If you back up your entire ECU beforehand and then restore from that then would that not work?
As stated before mate, it did not work for me. To be fair I assumed that as it didn't work for me that it wouldn't for others. ECU Software versions, VCI firmware versions etc vary fairly wildly as well, depending on when someone bought the map/VCI from FastChip. I don't know which versions are locked or unlocked and the change logs to those aren't available publicly etc. Generally a lack of information to narrow it down.

Unfortunately the ECU along with the keys et al have now found a home inside a 182 in Romania, so I can't send it to anyone/play with it any further myself.

Not to be pedantic, but in the interest of thoroughness/information for the thread... You did also try to re-flash the back up of your OE ECU software?
Yes - just to be clear for the purpose of the thread, I tried connecting with the RON98 map - got an error. Then used RSTuner to restore my old 8000_7802 map (oe) and then tried again, got the same error. I then restored the RON98 map and tried my OBD scan tool, which works fine and is able to read form the ECU. So at this point in time, i'm not sure if its the galletto or the ECU. The error I am getting is 'error send wake', so I guess the ECU is not rebooting correctly or the bootloader has been changed. Or it is possible that my galletto does not work.

I might buy an mpps just for the sake of research to see if the results are the same.

@The Fatty To be explicitly clear, you restored both the .cal (the map file) AND the .rst (ECU software) files that you originally backed up from your car? It is the ECU .rst software that is of significance because that is what 'locks' the ECU.

yes I restored the 8000_7802.rst file.

So it would appear that the ECU remains locked/encrypted despite re-flashing the original firmware. Thanks for taking the time to test/post about that Fatty, corroborates my experience(s) and (to me) confirms that for all intents an purposes, the RSTuner does lock the ECU out from being custom mapped by any tuners other than 1 specialist in Leeds, who Henk claims could re-flash it to stock, or a handful of tuners who would map it using the RSTuner to upload etc.
