RStuner Cardiff \ Newport info

  2002 172 Sport
Hey Guys
Is there anyone on here local to me Cardiff or Newport with knowledge of these to help explain to me if they are worth looking into and if so what local service is there to me that can carry this out?
Please accept my ignorance on this as i am clueless when it comes to these things so appologies all round.
I am looking for benefits explained against cost, also someone local that has these capabilities.

Many Thanks In Advance
Shane

Yes mate, live in Newport, work in Cardiff and RS tunered my flamer a couple of months back.

I wouldn't imagine you'll find a garage to do it for you if that's what you mean by local service. If you've got a laptop or access to a laptop and about £200 (most of which you can get back by selling on the tuner hardware once you've used it) then it really isn't a big job. I'd suggest you get paid up membership on here (more than worth the £12) and bag yourself a used one in the car parts for sale section for a little over £100. Then you need to purchase the maps and licence from fastchip (happy to help you out working out what maps to buy if you need some help).

You then back up your cars settings to your laptop, write the new maps to the ecu and thats pretty much all there is to it. You can then either sell the tuner on for what you paid for it or keep it for it's other features. Personally I flogged mine on as I would never ever want to go back to the shitty map that comes as std on the car. Drives so much better with the rstuner maps developed by Henk.

The only other thing I'd say though is if you've had any significant performance mods made to your car like a de-cat, cams, itb's etc then it's probably best to get a custom remap done at somewhere like RS tuning. If you're like me and the car is pretty standard then the rs tuner is probably the best value mod you can do for the money imho. Oh and henk who sells the maps does a discount for CS members so you'll make your membership back just through the discount on the rst and cal files.

Anyway drop me a PM if you want anymore info or do a search on here for RS tuner as it's been covered a fair bit. I just read all the threads, read henks fastchip.nl website and gave it a go. Car is so much nicer to drive now.

Good morning Mate
Thanks for all that info it is greatfully recieved. Yeah i was looking for someone local that would be able to carry this out as they would know what they are doing. Nice to hear you are local to me, my car is standard i have not done anything to it at all. That would be great for any help if i end up buying one of these myself and giving it a go. What were the results like you seen in the before and after of doing your motor?

All the best
Many thanks

Yeah get an RS tuner then. I'd be impressed if you can find a garage or similar to do it (particularly with no rs specialists in town). The most challenging part is getting the right maps for your ecu and using the fastchip website isn't as straightforward as it could be. Once you've got the maps and software etc then it is as simple as plugging a usb stick in a pc to be honest. If you do get a tuner and want a hand working out what maps you need just drop me a line. Henk to be fair is helpful in that respect and will tell you if you've got the right ones etc.

The two main results of updating the map on my ecu were

1 - I used to find when starting the car of a morning it was lumpy as hell and drove as rough as a dog until it had warmed up a bit. With the new map on it has taken this issue away completely and the car is smooth to drive from cold.

2 - The main bonus though is that you will probably find when you drive your clio about now if you rev it up to around 4.5k to 5k rpm all of a sudden you get this big lump of power and the acceleration really kicks in. However having to rev the car up to 5k rpm makes you sound like a chav and it's not really great having to wait for this kick before you get the acceleration the engine can deliver.

What the RS tuner map will do is more or less remove the 5k rpm kick and you find the power is there right across the rev range which really does make it much more fun to drive. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face the first spin I took it out for after putting the map on it really is a noticeable improvment. Pretty sure I read a thread on here where someone had put their standard map back on after running the rs tuner map for a long while and couldn't believe how bad it was.

In terms of torque or bhp I have no idea what the diffrences are, I'm sure there must be someone on here who has rolling roaded their car after they've used a tuner and have seen the dyno graphs etc but that's not something I've done.

Anyway for the sake of £100 for maps and licence, once you sold on the rs tuner it's an absolute bargain.

What colour 172 have you got anyway might see you around. I'm in a flame red 172 with a CS sticker in the rear window below the brake light.

Hey JBC27
Thanks for all that info seems like it is the way to go realy for the money also is well worth it.
To be honest i have not given it a good session driving yet due to not having the time.
There is alot of support on here so WHEN i do get the CStuner i dont think i could go wrong if i do get stuck.
Mine is a dark blue like midnight blue not sure of the proper name for it i am mostly around Cardiff on the weekend but i live closer to RCT. It is pure standard at the moment not realy sure what to do to it the mrs says leave it alone and grow up LOL (girls for you i guess).
It is a case of where to start and what to do not ever realy been my thing but its a little Go Kart so might as well mess with it a little.
So any surgestions will also be taken onboard money providing (dont want it to become a money pit).

All the best
Many thanks
Shane
