Rusty sills + MOT

  Jap Box
Hi,

Just wondering what exactly gets tested on these, the car can still be jacked up on the sills but at certain points it will creak like a b**ch upon being jacked because most of the sill has surface rust/ total rust on there.

Didnt get an advisory last year on it but I think its gotten worst after the winter so just wondering what exactly will fail it?

Thanks, Kerry

It shouldn't fail, I doubt it is structurely unsafe or within 300mm of a suspension mount.

excessive corrosion or hole within 30cm from a load bearing point ie seatbelt mounting/suspension mounting etc will fail

I think they tap it with a special hammer, if it punches through it fails if not your OK

Ah right judging by that its fine then :) no holes or anything but under extreme loads such as jacking the car up it will creak, suppose il get it looked at after the MOT when ive gathered some cash.

I wouldn't bother wasting the few hundred you'd spend repairing it.

Read it up and heared you can just pad holes out with fibreglass kits, then il simply spray some underseal over that. Not too sure how well it will work but theyve already been repaired using silicone anyway.

took it to a mates garage today and its very very bad, upon lifting the car the front jacking point just crumbled up and bent in under the shell, and the rear one also bent in slightly and snapped a bit off.

Only on the drivers side though so its having plates welded on :)
