Scanners

Car  Clio 1.2 16v
I'm interested in purchasing one of them scanners, you can listen to various things on different frequences. Apparantly you can use a normal radio on MW? You can get the scanners for 20 quid on ebay, anyone know if their any good?

thanks

I used one once.

Wasnt that hi-tech, but managed to find out when the 999 call went in and how long we had so it served its purpose.

It's not illegal to listen, just illegal to act upon the information you hear iirc, (unless they've changed that law too, then my appologises) used to have a scanner years ago when I was Citizen Band Radio user (before Broadband internet too! lol)

Was kinda funny listening to the police chase local suspects too :D

Common mis-conception im afraid, the wireless telegraphy act states that you can only receive any transmission that you are licensed to, technically its illegal to listen to anything barring public broadcasts.

Actually long winded legaleese b****cks is...

48 Interception and disclosure of messages

(1) A person commits an offence if, otherwise than under the authority of a designated person—
(a) he uses wireless telegraphy apparatus with intent to obtain information as to the contents, sender or addressee of a message (whether sent by means of wireless telegraphy or not) of which neither he nor a person on whose behalf he is acting is an intended recipient, or
(b) he discloses information as to the contents, sender or addressee of such a message.
(2) A person commits an offence under this section consisting in the disclosure of information only if the information disclosed by him is information that would not have come to his knowledge but for the use of wireless telegraphy apparatus by him or by another person.
(3) A person does not commit an offence under this section consisting in the disclosure of information if he discloses the information in the course of legal proceedings or for the purpose of a report of legal proceedings.
(4) A person who commits an offence under this section is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale.
(5) “Designated person” means—
(a) the Secretary of State;
(b) the Commissioners for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs; or
(c) any other person designated for the purposes of this section by regulations made by the Secretary of State.

So just dont tell anyone ;) but expect to get arse raped if the bizzies catch you listening in to around the 452MHz area of the spectrum :)

Fair enough, always thought to listen but not to act upon the information contained was legal. :o

Thanks for the true answer :approve:

Pretty much a waste of time now. I recently bought a Internet Radio and you can listen to lots of American police radio using that.

You can have a listen online first to see if you will find it useful. It is able to stream the on demand items from radio stations too which is handy.

I bought the Logik IR100 from Currys, currently reduced to £44.99

Obviously you'll need wifi at home to use it.

Test out what is on offer here. Nearly 10,000 stations available.

I found myself listening to odd things like JFK final approach and ground control. That's one busy airport.

Search for police or scanner and you'll get several results.

The live streaming of last saturday's Radio 2 Russell Brand show which worked perfectly too.

Thanks for the link, I'll add some more feeds onto my radio :)

Thankfully you can customise favourites etc on the reciva website and it updates these automatically to the radio.
