self porting inlets

Has anyone done this? I saw the recent matched inlet thread which was a bit all over the place lol

but has anyone matched them, and ported them themselves????

cheers

i have a fake electric dremmel and have a compressor just need the tools which are cheap enough

what did you port them too???? the gasket size?

I used a carbide burr in a electric drill, then polished up with 60 grit paper in a flap wheel.

Yeah I just ported the lower inlet out to the gasket size top and bottom, then made sure the top half matched the lower part of the manifold.

Notice difference?

Difficult to say really mate. I'd like to think so, but in all honesty I really couldn't tell. For reference though, I went up against a ph1 that was stripped out with only a pair of bucket seats and a dash, and I was in mine which is stripped out but has the added weight of a cage and I was gaining on him at full throttle.

I managed to aquire an R S stamped lower inlet for my ph1 which had been diy`d ported, got fred to fit it at BTM and i would say, that on the way home noticed a bit extra in the lower end,but not much.

if you went out to the gasket on the head end of the inlet, you went too far

Ah that's interesting then because the gasket matched the size of the inlet ports. That's why I matched it to the gasket. How far should I have gone then out of interest? I'm genuinely interested to know as I have another lower inlet sat in my shed.

Bit of info, including flow results, in my project thread.

After putting ours on a flow bench it looked like the upper needed a bit more work to be matched to the lower RS manifold (this had been matched correctly to the head already). Thought i would have a look myself and have a go. Ideally i would have liked some engineers blue to do this but inspected the port sizes against the gasket instead. There wasnt much in it (it had been done before) and I found it difficult to align the two halves consistently to "match" them. Well done Renault for putting only one locating pin between the two halves - as there is quite a bit of float between the bolts and bore holes of the upper i decided it was close enough for me. In the end i just refined the finish of the casting of the upper.

anyone can port a head.

but whether they can do it properly and an even job across all ports is another story. If it was easy to then tuners wouldnt spend thousands on cnc machines and flow benches.. even then there is still a good few hours work involved.

IMO clear any casting imperfections and leave the port work alone.
And also note if your going to do the full port , the finished texture also plays a part in how it will run/ perform.

we're on about the inlet manifold here not the head

so now we're advising not to port the inlet manifold out to the gasket size yes? just match the two parts of the manifold together?
