Sequence of mods?

  MK1 Mexico, Clio 172
Hi all

what's the general sequence of modding on these cars, I've got to get a new steering wheel because it's revolting, 4 tyres of the same would be good and changing the green stuff pads, then what eibachs and arb? Then the seats will probably have to be changed. Anything else that should be considered? I don't want to go mad, apparently it's allready got full stainless steel exhaust, updated disks - drilled and grooved (although I thought you either had one or the other), I don't know what type, and air filter thingy.

FYI spoke to Renault today, they want £370 + vat for a new steering wheel, they can do one!!

as a general rule i start with suspension/brakes then the styling then the engine/exhaust.

all depends on what your car needs though and what you want out of it, some on here are all show no extra go and some are driven not detailed!!!
a chap on here can re-trim the steering for £150 or you can get an aftermarket one with a boss for that if you would prefer non oe look!!

You can get the steering wheel retrimmed from a guy on here for around the £150 mark I think, you need to be a payed up member to see the for sale section though.

I start with whatever is on its way out.

So my exhaust was blowing, so upgraded exhaust.

Springs were of different age's, noticably so that it pulled to one side, so got my coilovers.

Brakes were shot, so upgraded brakes.

Just waiting for my throttle body to go now......lol

The retrimmed ones do look spot on,

It depends on the car really.

If I bought a Cup the first thing that'd be on my list after making sure everything is good with filter changes would be seats. A FF 172 I'd look at changing the wheels, on a 182 I'd probably get some coilovers before wheels as I like there's more. A Trophy? No idea. To a V6.. well that would be interesting!

I'm not at all bothered about changing the look it's purely about improving the driving experience, I want to use it a bit on track but not destroy the B road fun e.g I don't want it to fling me into a ditch on a good country road

Number one mod would be to get experience before B road fun then!

not sure that's a fair comment, I've driven some cars that are so track orientated that they are in effect race cars, if you take one down a bumpy country lane they can get out of shape because of the suspension, geo etc

I live in your town. Pop over and try mine.

Will give you a much better idea of what you wanna do with yours I think.

I've done LOADS to mine in a very short space of time.

Changing the Steering wheel to a sabelt 'Renault Sport' one from a Cupracer was up there with THE best mod!

soooooooooo much better in feel.

and yes... the seats are kinda rubbish. They are also FAR too high!!!! Mine are much lower and really really comfy and supportive.

I think you will like :)

come and have a blast in it. You can have a go in some other cars as well if you like.

IMO you should always start with the bits that are broken / on their way out.
For example, the first mod I did to my car was fit Eibach Sportline springs because one of the rear coil springs had snapped. Next were brakes because I needed new disks and pads. Next was a decent exhaust because the standard one fell to bits. Then onto tyres, bulbs, etc...
The difference with me is that I wanted a semi-sleeper. 172's are fairly quick little cars, as most people know, but I decided I want mine to look fairly standard yet go like stink.
The only "styling" mods I'll make are different wheels, possibly a Cup spoiler and possibly a splitter (although I'm swaying away from that idea now). I've also fitted the mandatory smaller front number plate, Silvervisions and CTR aerial.

In short, I'd say replace the bits that are worn out or broken first, then do the rest in whatever order you want. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day - it's your car. Some people prefer to go for looks, some for cleanliness, some for outright performance and some just glue random Halfords bits on, which is fine if you're 17 and hang about in McDonalds car parks.

if you want it as a drivers car dnt bother getting another standard wheel get a 350 omp wheel or somthing similar the one that comes as standard could happly pilot a pirate ship
