Seriously.......W.T.A.F? Tyres mauled.

  2003 Clio 172
OK, so I posted a previous thread about wandering and unease at speed.......read as motorway speeds and over.

So, was having my usual wee hoke about underneath the car to see what is about to fall off and noted that my 4/5 month old Conti's are utterly mashed :(

Gutted........

Keep in mind, this car has been alignment checked twice at 2 separate and highly regarded tyre shops.

I also checked all of the joints and links myself, these were replaced about 2 years ago now and still seem just fine. No play. I remember the ones the car arrived with and they were monumentally bucked.

Couple of pics attached to see if that helps diagnose, doubtful, I know.

What is odd is that the wear is on the inner edge of both tyres (not the odd bit) but just before the end of the tyre, there is a lip or a raise in the tread.......all my other cars that did this out of alignment were smooth to the edge. Significant?

Any and all advice appreciated as usual guys, these wee w**kers are expensive enough wihout having a rubber addiction.

Cheers
Andy

Do you drive it fairly hard? and suffer from a fair amount of understeer when pushing on ? looks like it has rolled the rubber to the inner edge , not seen it on a road tyre before but seen race tyres do that usually with the rubber heavily grained .

Hey bud, yeah.....I do push it on a fair lick.......nothing stupid mind. It would tend to wash out at the minute too, wouldn't expect anything less if if seems to be depending on a small patch of tyre that is basically slick now.

A wee bit frustrating as the Uniroyals that were on before were truly chewed fairly evenly regardless of how I was driving, you know?

Gotcha Rob, but i smashed the pie out of it before and it didn't do this. You know?

Especially not on both.

Fact: i hate going round left bends fast :) So I would have expected one to be alive at least. Both are duff.

No dude, absolutely stock setup.

Although I never received a report from either outfit detailing the figures.

Perhaps that is my next step to see if that info helps you guys?

No mate, neither outfit produced a sheet......well, they had it, but I didn't ask for it if I am being honest.

They just told me it was on the money, no charge and i went on my way to look at other options. Hindsight tells me I should have done different.

I will do it again

looking at the way its gone it does have a bit of camber , but the rubber has rolled due to understeer and abuse . I didn't want to insult you by jumping straight in with that but i would say thats the case .

As for why its doing it now and didn't before can depend on so much , tyre compound , tempreture when you were pushing on , and because it rolls the rubber to the edge it won't clean back up again , unlike tyres that have taken loads of heat abuse on the whole surface .

Looks just like what has happened to the Toyo's I have fitted to my golf. That was due to excessive toe out at the front to aid turn in and may explain the sensation of wandering at speed. As for the lip, personally I would say that is just due to that being the point at which the harder sidewall rubber meets the softer tread rubber...... Its doubtfull it is just down to abuse on the road......

I was going to suggest this.

They are set to 1minute toe out as standard allegedly. I asked for a little more last time I got tracked up and I nailed a pair of Pilot Sportd

So surely if I go and get the alignment done again and am anal about it insisting on seeing the results, if its on spec and i drive like a nun, it should wear evenly, no?
