..Shall I?

  BMW E92/Audi S3
Many of you know about the .:R32 that a mate is holding for me, but I've been offered a black 172 with 39k on the clock (03 plate) in P/X for my car. I've just gone through different quotes with insurance companies for the .:R and the 172, the 172 is obviously dirt cheap compared to the .:R and will be cheaper to run in general!
I've driven a 172 before and i found it fun! (Apart from the huge steering wheel) and I've also thought about pro's and cons of both cars! Here's what I came up with..

Pros (For 172):
Way cheaper to run.
Low mileage.
One year newer than my 1.4.
Fun.

Cons (For 172):
It's French.
..The grills need changing.

--------

Pro's (.:R)
Looks the sex.
Fast.
Spacious.
German.

Con's (.:R)
Its been to the moon and back and then took the Futurama set on a tour around the world
At that mileage, it's had no cambelt change yet.
It's going to leave a huge dent in my bank account, and I will narrowly make it through bills etc.

I was speaking to a few members from the meet last night about this, they all said to get the 172.
What would you do?

172 and change the steering wheel you will love it mate.

Grills are hardly a big deal! lol.. £40ish for the top one, the bottom is less than that.

R32 is more grown up really and as you act like an 8 year old, Id suggest the 172! lol..

Whats most of your driving like? If its back roads, driving around like with a bit of pace and you actually want to feel like you're going fast, get the 172.

If you spend your life on the motorway, get the R32 and enjoy not hearing anything but your missus moaning and the sat nav, then get the Golf.

Totally different cars tho really.

i love my ph1, the onli thing ive had to replace in 18 months of ownership is a radiator!(100k on the clock) Fuel is the onli thing that kills me!! Never driven a 32 b4 tho but imagine it wud pull ur pants down on running costs etc. The way things are today id go 172!

p.s Narrowly making it through bills is shite btw, money to put away at the end of the month ftw!!

I rarely ever to motorway journeys in any of my cars (Though I love em) but would you say the 172 still drinks alot on the motorway?
172 option is looking pretty good atm..

Traffic light grand prix's and hanging around in carparks with mates in the evenings iirc.

Id get the 172.

172 no question. Get an R32 afterwards when the right car comes along & your in a better position to live with the running costs.

If you can't comfortably afford it, wait. Get the 172, enjoy that for a while, than maybe go for the R32. Like you said, its going to be more expensive, and I wouldn't imagine the cambelt change will be cheap.

buy what you can afford fella, then you'll have a couple of quid knocking about to mod it to your tastes etc and still be able to pay the bills & have hot water!

Don't be fooled into thinking the R32 is alot faster than the Clio, there's not alot in it in reality!

^News to me lol.
Yeah, I thought that there is no point sacrificing lots of necessities just for a car so it looks like I may be one of the sheep on here ;)

If you could comfortable afford it and it was a good example (mega-high miles and no belt change suggests poor service history?) then I'd say R32 all day long, but there's no point making yourself insecure financially just for a car, especially at the moment.

"narrowly making it through bills" you have answered your own questions right there IMO.

Once the novelty wears off on the R you will p1ssed off you have no money at the end of the month.

172 , no brainer.

172, you'll get 35mpg all day long. I like the mk4 R32's, but with the high miles it's not a wise choice IMO.

172 all day long i was gettin 37.6 mile to the gallon on motorway yesterday

I'm sure the timing belt change wont be too cheap on the R32, resale value will be very low if it already has intergalactic miles.
The Konig seats in the MK4s are horrible IMO, and the running/tax/servicing costs of it would put me off straight away.

172 for me (Y)

Agree with everyone else, purely for the fact there's no point putting all your cash into the car.
