Shift Light

I'm thinking of installing a shift light or sequential light in my 182 and was wondering if anyone had already done this succesfully. I've searched the forum but can't find an 'idiots guide'.

I understand that there are 3 wires to connect - positive, negative and the wire it uses to get info about current rpm. Having looked at peoples post, this rpm wire seems to be a bit of a problem. Has anyone discovered where to connect it?

I dont think I could be arsed with the hassle, each to their own though.

Oil temp gauge would be more worthwhile addition IMO

Mine doesn`t have a shift light as such, i just change gear when it hits the red line area. Thats what its there for isn`t it ? :)

Regardless of the need (I think the engine noise gives you every indication you'll really ever need) I think it could be an interesting addition, could look quite nice. For that reason alone please let us know if you manage it, and how you did it!

Oil temp/pressure gauge would be my additions,

No real need for a shift light there is a dirty great dial next to the speedo to tell you how its reving! Spend a little time with the stereo off and listen to your engine you can hear/feel when you go past peak power thats when you change gear. When you get it on a RR you can get an exact peak power/rpm figure, stick a little bit of tape over the rev counter at that point, bonza!

Go for an enthusiastic drive for a couple of hours with the windows down you'll have it cracked by the time you get back!

I was under thge impression that a 172 reaches peak power about 500rpm before the limiter i.e. peak @ ~6250rpm?

I do understand tho, that things revs up to the limiter so fast in the first two gears you miss it if you blink.

Surely with the right ECU you could just change the standard light to come on a bit earlier rather than a bit late.
