this looks cool, what does it do? and do you have to use linux to have it?

Yes you have to have linux and it does too much to mention really, basically all the fancy effects you will see in Vista + more.

Serious question time (yes I should know better on CS).

Why would I want to run Ubuntu? I'm getting a laptop soon as a second pc mainly for web browsing and some office work so why should I install Ubuntu over XP/Vista?

Simple answer: personal preference.

It's not a resource hog.
No spyware.
No viruses.
Tons of free software.
Rarely have to reboot for updates.
Uptime is unlimited (see above) you don't have to reboot every few days to free up resources.
6 month release cycle (as opposed to MS's years)

At the end of the day it's what you feel comfortable with. If you've used linux before you'll probably have nothing to worry about else you have to cope with the learning curve, Personally I think it's well worth it but it's not for everyone. Also you don't have to use Ubuntu, there's hundreds of distro's to choose from. :)

You might want to have a gander at this though: Is Ubuntu for you?

I only chose to mention Ubunto Si as that seems the "easy" option compared to other distro's.

Tempted to give it a go. Not at all practical for my main PC but on a laptop why not.

Can't hurt to give it a go. The desktop cd you download is also a live CD so you can run Ubuntu from CD first to see how it copes with your hardware.

That's because of the nature of packaging.
It has to be a quick release cycle, else everyone is using old apps if they stick to the stable release. On Windows, you can install any application and it's pretty certain to work fine. If you install a new app on a Linux distro, then you end up upgrading libc, and a random load of other libs which can break other things..

This is why Debian is stable - their release cycle is quite long, so it makes for a great server OS.

To be honest, on Linux, 6 months is too long on a desktop, which is why I always usually end up using the unstable versions and fix anything which breaks after an update.
Ubuntu release is old after a month.. in terms of packages.

Anyway, yea.. :p
