So whats the penality on..

Dont worry he wont check. If he does you will end up with sumut like a producer. So no need to worry.
Most of them wouldnt notice a missing cat unless there interested in cars in which case there not going to try and get you for it.
Even if they have a tester and want to do you and you fail the test all they do is give you a form which means you have to get the car to an MOT center within a cerain amount of time and it has to pass the exissions test.
they cannot do anything if the car has no cat fitted, as it is not a legal requirement, the legal requirement is that the emission fall between a certain limit, if you fail the test, then yes, you will have to correct the problem within 14 days and as jay says, you will be given a rectification notice, which means you go to an MOT test centre and they make sure the car is legal on the roads again, then you go back to the poice station and all is presnt and correct

Stupid thing is that the roadside testers can fail you one nile down the road from the MOT centre that youve just driven out of!
if you get pulled by a roadside emissions test unit tho, and you fail on emissions, you get a £50 on the spot fine
and i bet you that no coppers can tell if you have a cat or not if you put the cat guard back on over the de-cat pipe, and they cant do f**k all about it if you havent got one lol
