I got mine delivered friday mornign from gameplay. loving pgr3 on my 42" hdtv hitachi plasma.

I played my mates machine for a few hours last night. Being a hardcore PC gamer, I wasnt massively taken back by the graphics - good, but nothing a decent PC cant do better.

I played PGR3 and PD Zero - both were great games, but the visuals didnt amaze me on my normal 32" CRT. Even in a higher res, it wont do anything that PCs havent been doing for the last 12 months or more. 'Next Gen' is accurate only in the context of consoles.

The wireless pads are prefectly weighted and feel superb. The noise is truly disturbing - 360 is NOISY...

I'll stick with my quieter and more powerfull PC for now thanks.

Roy - Did you have it running on a HD TV?

Also Roy what spec is your PC and what games do you have that better the graphics of the 360? I've got a pretty high spec gaming PC and Half Life 2 didn't match the graphics of the 360's i've seen running on a HD TV!

P4 3.0 @3.2, 2GB, 6800Ultra

No it wasnt in HD TV, but I could see that it would not look any better than a PC in high res. Impressive for a console but not shockingly good.

360 is a PC..its that simple..it has no technology that a PC didnt have last year. I like the Xbox 360 but it's just a cheap PC in a really noisy box.

FEAR, Quake 4, HL2, Doom 3...blah blah blah...basically all PC games of the last year or more look as good if not much better.

(in 1280x1024+ with max effects etc.)

LMFO ;) HL2 looks better on a console than on its original PC in 1280x1024 with max AA&AF? :rasp:

thing is most people are getting to experince what all the rich PC snobs with £1200 pc`s have been seeing for £270. even chavs can now view incredible graphics like a top end PC can do it also is easier to get into the whole online culture and its a more complete gaming experience.

im not getting one, i own a xbox and i never need another driving game after ralisport challenge its just perfect, completley perfect.

im going back to sony this time round for the PS3 and in the meantime saving up for a 1080P (1920x 1080) DLP 50" screen with direct digital connection. PS3 will support 1080P.

in comparison DVD looks good with 525i (704x576) interlaced 405,504 pixels
PS3 1080P full frame (1920 x 1080) progressive 2,073600 !!

Xbox is 720p (if you have the rigt display but its only component analogue R,G,B cable or VGA) and also many games arent HD there is a chip inside which output the line count like a line doubler but doesnt actually deliver HD !! in many cases.

basically the PS3 running Ultra HD via HDMI will be higher than 99% of LCD PC monitors/games run at now and the clarity will be enough to last until some other technology i.e 3d comes along

All the talk in the world doesnt change the fact that there isnt anything inside the 360 that makes it do anything that a PC already cant.

Considering the price though, it's damn good value. All I was saying is that for me, as a PC gamer, there isnt anything 'next gen' about the visuals - even on a HDTV it doesnt (AFAIK) do any graphical trickery in terms of pixel shading etc.

To put it into perspective - the mate who bought his 360 over on Friday night, saw Half Life 2 Lost Coast (the tech demo) playing on my PC on saturday morning - and his comments were basically along the lines of "makes you realise that all the next gen hype is a load of b****cks really - since the PC has been doing it for ages"

360 is a small cheap PC, just like the 1st Xbox. It is good value, but to stand a chance of matching a power PC visually, you really do need a new sparkling HD display. You also need a keyboard and mouse for playing shooters :rasp:

I reckon I will upgrade my Xbox to a 360 though, as consoles are a more social gaming experience if you have mates over :)

I am quite impressed with mine. I have PGR3, PDZ and Kameo and they certainly look better and smoother than anything my FX53/X800XT/1GB PC can produce plus I have proper 5.1 sound using a simple optical lead as opposed to p*ssing around with loads of wires and a decent online service.

FEAR was an absolute shambles running on my system, kept crashing and pausing as it seemed to load stuff off the disk and the frame rate was never that hot. Couldn't compare with playing PDZ co-op!

Most of these launch titles look like they were rushed especially PGR3 so I am expecting things to get a lot better.

In all honesty I believe my PC should be able to produce a similar experience but it seems as though PC games are not as tightly and efficiently programmed so a lot of power is wasted. PC Games developers just have the attitude that if it doesn't run right on your PC thats your tough sh*t and you should go out and buy an SLI system with 2 x £500 gfx cards, a £600 CPU and £400 worth of RAM.

I will have a £280 Xbox 360 thanks.....

Well that's the whole point with PC games. They are pushing the technology. A brand new cutting edge PC shooter shouldnt run liquid smooth with everything maxed out...PC games, and PC gamers, are always pushing the boundaries of new hardware. At least on PC you get the option to tailor the game to your machines capabilities.

I'm not knocking 360, it's a great machine. I'm simply stating that it is a PC, with no groundbreaking graphical features that arent already available in a regular desktop machine. The same was true of the original Xbox when it was launched.

It doesnt matter to me personally, as I intend to get a 360, and I'm also going to rebuild my PC with some serious hardcore components. If cost is the driving factor then Xbox 360 wins all day long, but when it comes to ultimate high res graphical performance with massive levels of AA & AF in the very latest cutting edge shooters, there's no substitute for the desktop gaming PC IMHO

I am a PC gamer and have been for 12 years or so. I am there to play games, not push technology for big multinational corporations. If they want to push their technology they can pay and place adverts like everyone else. If they collude with games developers to force me into buying their products then I won't buy their games - hence why I bought HL2 but not FEAR - not that many people bought FEAR, most had pirate copies.

My PC isn't top spec but it is still above "regular" and I haven't played games yet that can match my 360. I think piracy combined with the increased cost of development is such a problem with PC games that you will never see anything like PGR3 even if my PC could handle it. In the last ten years I have noticed the range of PC games available become more and more narrow with just a few good FPS's and some RTS's worth shouting about where as before there was a massive selection of top titles.

I need an upgrade now which to make it worth while will cost me around £1700 for the tower unit only. Fortunately it can use my LCD TV but it can't use my sound system due to the lack of an optical output on most sound cards so thats another £200 and millions of cables going around my room. Question is, can I really justify it when all I am going to play is the HL2 add on pack and CS which I can play already? What happened to the Geoff Crammond GP series, the Elite games, the EA F1 Games, X-Wing and Tie-Fighter sims, the Papyrus Indycar games?!? All gone! They were why I bought PC's but piracy and development costs have made them unprofitable.

^^ true, which is why you will get consoles supplied with almost full operating systems online conectivity and expensive microsoft peripheral like wireless keyboards and mice.. cant you see bill gates dream is coming to fruition to get a pc in every living room that replaces all other electronics.. its a music, dvd, games, internet browser in your living room with all upgrades and software royalties going to MS

but soon enough piracy will come to consoles not copying discs but actually sending the game online with cracked peerp-peer software running on xbox360 through xbox live, there is no escaping piracy just that at the moment millions of pounds are made for a decent selling game so the developers are leaving PC`s behind

F1 GP & the EA games dissapeared because sony have the exclusive rights to formula 1 games. Papyrus went bust (iirc), they wrote some awesome stuff (gp legends and like you said indycar racing), but it was "niche" market, "simulation" rather than arcade racing - I'd imagine most gamers just want to have a blast around the track with their mates.

I'd love to see a massive online elite style game with a massive universe etc, I doubt it's commercially viable though, would todays "first person shooter" gamer really be interested?

Time to dust off the old risc-pc and have a blast on elite ;)

  Yaris Hybrid
Yeah Elite should have continued especially now with online play it would be amazing with all the trading etc.

Not sure what Lucasarts are playing at with X-Wing and Tie Fighter. They keep bringing out the same old sh*t arcade games like those on the Cube instead of the proper sims (not that they were complex sims by todays standards). They would be great online especially if you could play co-op through the single player game but for some reason co-op gets missed out of most PC games yet it is the best bit of Xbox Live.

Playing co-op on PDZ is so cool! Can't wait for 4 player Ghost Recon co-op and the inevitable Rainbow Six game!

LOL what is all this talk of piracy?? The only consoles that have ever been tough nuts to crack, have been Nintendo machines. Pirated/copied/downloaded games have been rife on most optical drive based consoles for years.

Also, the reason PC games cost half as much as console games is largely because developers have a far bigger user base in the PC, so can claw back development costs that much quicker.

I guess the reason I prefer the PC is that I'm a major shooter fan, and lets be honest - barr the odd example like Halo, Goldeneye or PZero - all the best shooters appear on PC first.

Toypop - the PlayStation was the most pirated console in history, yet Sony still made a bomb from it.... ;)

Personally, I'm a PC man. You will never get a console person to see the appeal in the PC platform - regardless of how powerful a PC is or will get. I reformatted my PC for the first time in about 6 months this morning. A good 3hour process due to the BIOS defaults screwing it over with a loud 'BEEP!'. Got it sorted though and with a clean OS, updates and the compulsory install of BF2, it's running perfectly. Each issue and snag I hit is all part of the learning process - a process that goes back to what I was saying - something that a console owner will never appreciate.

I look back on all the fond gaming memories, the hardware issues, the software crashes and ongoing patches that I've had since my first PC landed in my bedroom in November 1992 - and think of how far things have moved on.

Put simply, £3k of new PC components in front of me would be a good challenge to have - something that would test you to wring the very best in terms of performance out of it. A console would be boring - chuck in a DVD and it just works. Where's the fun in that?! :D

I can hand-on-heart say that if fully loaded 360 landed in my lap now, I'll leave it unopened and try to flog it. With the cash (of which I'd probably get a fair price at the minute!) I'd be buying PC components instead...

I had a few hours on Monkeys last night and I`m sorry but the graphics on PGR3 are awesome...it would cost a fecking fortune getting a PC to run those graphics as smooth and consistant as those imo...just the graphics card alone would have to be £100 + more than the XB360 machine...and I`m a sony fan!

you can get optical outputs on sound cards built into mobos quite often and any decent soundcard such as an audigy has the ability to have optical out on it.

the 360 is superior to most pc's its probably better than mine and i have a very high spec pc. 4400+ 7800GTX 512 DFI SLI DR mobo COrsair XMSXL memory all overclocked as well and gets some stupid scores on benchmarks and doom3 is playable with everything maxed at 1600x1200. the 360 deffinately has more power. and i will end up buying on in the future as when mates are round just good fun to sit in front of the tv and have a laugh with a few beers playing games in the lounge.

My pc however isnt just a games machine. However as a games machine its stupidly quick as well. And what you have to consider is the 360 is £280 my cpu alone was £350 my graphics card another £475 when you start adding it up the 360 becomes massively worth the cash.

And the guy who said somethign console owners dont appreciate with the working out of bugs so true. if a pc doesnt work like it should right away theres just soemthign about getting it running well you can sit back and say i did that. where as a console owner plugs it in and presses the power button its done.

I have formatted 3 times in the last 2 days due to this new hardware working bugs out and now it is running absolutely perfect im happy i spent the time doing it.

I've just priced up a new motherboard, cpu and gfx card. Comes in at around £1000, but believe me when I say it will own any Xbox 360 :clown:

like to see how cause as i said it just cost me £950+ and my system is now basically a dual FX 55(4400+ overclocked) with a 7800GTX 512 and a DFI lanparty sli dr board. £982 for those 3 parts it was.

And i know this thing has less processing ower than the xbox graphical power im not so sure aobut since this card is a complete beast. And currently the fastest thing on the market. And im still saying in hardware terms the 360 has more power.

You can compare it to somethign that has 6 way processing like the xbox does you cant get a triple cored cpu for the pc.....yet.

Lol few hours, you didn't leave till 2.35am hehe I agree with your though, after 12+ hours on the console so far, I haven't once seen the framerate drop on either PGR3 or COD2, both look really, really good on my standard CRT, PC's do good first person shooters, but consoles do Arcade racing down to a T, each to their own, no need to **** either platform off, don't like the xbox don't buy one, don't like the PC don't buy one. I remeber these arguments about whats better when I was at school..lol and it's still going on twelvety million years later. Oh if anyone wants my gamer tag it's Flambe Monkey, but be warned I'm ace at PGR3 *sarcasm*

Actually saw my first view of a 360 today. Out doing some Chrimbo shopping in Bury and they had the full 360 setup in GameStation. Had the King Kong game on and two teenies looked like they were getting semi's on just playing it..... "Look at the f**king graphics, just look at the fooking graphics!!!"

Yes, young man - I'm looking at the graphics already ;) Did look good, I'll have to admit - very smooth too. Kind of pointless PR if you ask me though as valuable shelf space was taken up with 360 boxes - all with a SOLD OUT sticker on them! :S
