those are solid state though are they, surely they are the ones with built in memory recording in Mpeg4?

those are digital tapes, i have a sony minidv and they are very good, that oe for £200 odd i paid around 1k for 5 years ago!

I've got a Samsung VP-D80 DV Camcorder (DV= Digital tape)

It's got 10x Optical and 400x digital zoom but I never use the digital and if I'd have known then when I bought it I would have looked for a higher optical DV camcorder.. Still, Its got firewire/Aux/S-video connections on it and you get the option of recording in either 12bit or 16bit sound, its good to use plus its easy and straight forward to use too ... Only problem I have with it is the battery life is short, As with all cameras though. Arm yourself with loads of batteries and film!! :D

Daft question - If I get one of these can I connect it to the PC via USB and then transfer what I've recorded onto my hard drive ready for editing etc..?

yes as long as it has a usb2.0 connection, video used to be transferred by firewire as USB 1.1 wasn't fast enough but now they are the same speed to tend to find one or the other or both, mainly firewire though i think.

when it says it has DV In/Out this means it has firewire, DV out allows you to output the video to a pc for editing and DV in means ou can transfer the edited video back onto the tape if you wish, but nowadays most people will burn it to a dvd.

most cameras used to only have DV out and the premium ones had both but thats not as much the case now they are so cheap

Same JVC is cheaper from the link above, but from what i could see y0z it appears to be primarily a MiniDV (tape) camera with an MMC 8mb backup for photo stills.

Some suggestions:
Compact, cheap - http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/168844/art/sanyo/xacti-digital-movie-c40.html

I'd check some reviews first but personally Nikon/Pentax/Minolta/Canon/Sony/Fuji you can't go far wrong with.

from what i have sen from the solid state ones y0z they don't seem that hot to be honest, you still can't beat a bit of digital tape!

the dvd ones i have seen aren't 100% great at panning fast, they don't seem to like it, for trackdays, can't really go wrong with a minidv digital tape one mate, the one clart linked or the sony one you linked in your first post would be fine!
