Solwise Homeplugs - ethernet over power lines

i remember reading somebody uses these on here.

can anybody give me any comments from their own experiences with them?

i have a customer who has a wireless router and their house is 3 floors.

the router is on the 2nd floor.

they can't get good reception downstairs.

rather than take my chances with an external aerial i was gonna just add some homeplug's and have this downstairs :

I guess it would work, I just have never liked the idea of sending data over power cables.. its probably perfectly safe though.

Works great mate, they've been utilising this powerline malarky for sometime now. There was a widespread beta test of the technology a while back, but I think the market went in the other direction.

what is your point?

the fact one says 54mbps and the other says 85mbps ?

it's because it also has an ethernet port, so the wireless part works at 54mbps and the wired part works at 85mbps.

it's for my customer to browse the web, the speed of the device isn't really an issue.

Adam, my post was in reply to Mells.. asking how fast it ws.. I already know about the speed difference between wired/wireless but thanks anyway lol ;)

Wireless is fine for gaming and general browsing. I would never send bank details, personal emails over a wireless network, just asking for trouble and you don't need to be particularly good with computers to sniff what you send between a network card and router either.

Very true.. although along the same lines as that, I doubt that there is any sort of filtering at the main electrical box with these things.. so any data you sent over your electrical cables will probalby be sent to everyone on the block.. unencrypted..

I tried to find some decent info on the security vulnerabilities and noise generation of Powerline networking, not much satisfactory info on the Net tbh, but if anyone has any work they have done at Uni on these things (from a security point of view) or if anyone else has any such information that you dont mind dishing out, drop us a PM.

Anyway for the people interested in the basics of there security....

There is software that allows you to set up encryption, should you need it. This is only an issue if you are worried that someone is going to break in to your house and plug in a module of their own. read last quote

The above quote contradicts the first quote in this post, moral of the story, never take everything at face value that you read on the Net.

Thought it would.. 56bit encryption isnt really that great.. they use 128bit for https transactions.

right, i have them in my posession now and have tried them in my own house.

i do have to say that they work really really well.

at present i have s**t loads of stuff downloading so i can't test if they will transfer at the full rate of my connection, but so far all seems good.
