sounds like a major problem

  clio 172 cup
Hi.
Ive only had my 172 cup a week and just popped to the shop in it. I pulled out the estate and heard something go, it felt like something snap. now theres a horrendous slapping sound and the engine is really noisy. i cant see anything under the bonnet but dont really know what im looking for. i limped it home and am now bracing myself for the worst. Think i should call the AA.

DON'T even run the engine anymore until someones looked at it! Preferably someone who knows the cars well.

aux belt snapped and took the timing belt with it probably
Not necessarily if the engines still running but might not be far away.

just had a better look. spark plug number 2 has blown out the top. thats as much as i know. Am i right in thinking the inlet has to come off to get to the plugs? never seen that before.

still waiting for RAC. But im thinking worse case scenario: Plug has stripped thread, blown out the engine, particles have entered the cylinder and trashed the bore. So pretty much a rebuild?

does anyone want to make my day and tell me its just need a bit of t-cut.

Might need helicoiling - then again you might get away with ramming a decent set of plugs in. I had a blow out last year with s**tty super 4s in number 3 and the thread remained mainly intact. Thank your stars it isn't your belts

Update.
Rac guy was really good, tried to put the plug back in but no good. He spoke to a local mechanic who said he's had good results using his helicoil tool from the top and the labours like 80 quid.
If the head has to come im looking at more like 500+ yikes.

So the cars off the road untill they can pick it up and have a go.

What a bummer.

He also said renaults were the most unreliable cars! haha. But did say the 2.0 16v was a fairly good one.

This has happened a good few times to various people, tends to happen if the spark plugs haven't been torqued up correctly. They're quiet tight as plugs go at 30nm, so they get undertightened. Usually tend to get away with helicoiling tbh so fingers crossed!

Just a quick update. I have just had the car back from a local garage in Cardiff who were recomended to me for this particular job. The cost was £129 which included collecting the car on there lorry, helicoiling the sparkplug, changing the plugs and leads which I supplied. Not to bad really and the car seems as good as it was before. Hopefully I can now get on with enjoying the car.
Thanks for your help with this.
