Can you fit 10mm spacers to a 172 with the origional wheel studs or do you have to get the bolts?

You will indeed need longer bolts!

10mm spacers aren't hubcentric though so wouldn't be as "robust"

rule of thumb i go buy,
if the bolts goes round 360 degrees 8+ times, it will be fine,

though i counted 11 with my 5mm spacers so not sure if that even helps.
