Speed of Steam at the minute?

Ok, it's probably getting dry-humped to within an inch of its life with the Summer Sale currently being on.

But I want to check if anyone else is having probs? I've brought my freshly reformatted PC around to a decent internet connection, but the Steam downloads are still horseshit. When I try other non-Steam games and even getting the patches for them - they fly down with no hesitation at all.

Anyone else the same?

Yup only getting downloads of a little over 2MB a second. Normally in steam it's around 4.5MB/s.

Also getting random unable to connect to server messages trying to look through the store.

Love Steam. It's so awesome I've used it to purchase games that I've already previously owned boxed versions of, just for the convenience of it all. Namely Crysis, and FarCry 2.

I've not used it to download for a fair couple of weeks though so couldn't comment on the speed.

Roy if you didn't know, if you already own the game and have a CD key for it. Just go to steam and select Game and then activate a game on steam. Enter your cd key and it will add it to your steam purchases if the game is available on steam.

Worked with a fair few of my own games. No need to buy twice.

Also Darren if you are using a backup through steam I can never be bothered with that. Just go into your steam folder and copy the .GCF files. Then install steam as normal drop all the files back where they are supposed to be and restart steam.

Some of your games might also have their own folders in the steamapps section. So often better to just copy the lot over. What I usually do. Mainly as I have a lot of mods and custom maps etc.

I had tried something similar before but I was pissed, and all I ended up doing was creating a Steam shortcut, so after that I just thought f**k it I'll purchase again. Thanks for the heads-up. I shall remember it for the future. Steam is the way forward for PC gaming. No more boxes, no more CD keys, no more updating with sequential patches, no more reinstalling a game on a new build and then adding twelve patches. No more opening a case only to find the disk is missing. No more "oh s**t I left the DVD back in the UK". It's just brilliant. It even makes console gaming look tiresome.
