Speedo intermittent

Only had the Cup two days but today the speedo needle dropped to zero & the engine note changed, the computer stopped counting mileage too. Started working again after couple of minutes with same change in engine note. Did it twice more on way home. Any ideas? :S

Can be signs of a the battery on its way out, sometimes the trip computer and mpg etc will stop recording when the battery voltage isn't as high as it should be, might be worth getting it checked at your local garage, should be free of charge. Also every time you stop then restart the car, all of the trip computer settings will be reset.

As to the engine note though, I’m not 100% sure, but on the phase 1 non sport Clio’s, the sensor in the gearbox which controlled the speedo would sometimes go crazy for a couple of minutes, then start working again. Renault used to sell the sensor and a new plug to attach to the loom to solve it. Unfortunately I’m unsure if it's a similar set up on a 172, hopefully someone can help you out on that one.

Ahh that's interesting as the trip computer does not show how many miles I got left & does re-set a lot. Only shows my MPG.

Yeah that sounds about right, if you've got a Renault dealer around yours they can do a 'midtronics' test which should test the condition of the battery free of charge, and I think the replacement battery part number is 063. Hope it sorts it

On my old ph2 172 (non cup) there was a sensor in the gearbox an I had a similar problem the speedo would dance around an mpg would under read, turned out to be the speedo sensor wiring chafing on the driveshaft!

On the cups I'm pretty sure it obtains its speed signal from one the abs system, one of the front sensors if I remember correctly?

just had this fixed on my 172, it is the speedo drive sensor in the gearbox and from what renault told me when they replaced it while my box was being recon'd the sensor was only about 20 squid and has been good as gold since!

Its the sensor for certain, it just pulls out. Literally take two minutes to change.

I will say, do it when the engine is cold, its pretty close to the manifold...

Sorry my bad, just seen my last post on about the abs Speedo pick up an realised its a cup haha.

Yeah it's be sensor no doubt but check the wiring too, I had a problem with it chaffing on driveshaft but as said its an easy fix.

You'd be right usually Dan, as models with ABS gets its reading through the ABS, but ones without will have the VSS in the gearbox.

Taken it out & cleaned it up, no wiring issues chaffing so give him a test drive, if still a problem will order one. Is Renault the best place or anywhere else?

Same thing here a while back. Got the sensor off eBay for about a tenner. Literally pull out and plug in the new one.
If you have a search there is a pic on here somewhere of one as it's quite far back. Change by feel really as you can't see passed your /arm to what you're doing.
