Speedo or Sensor? Any help??

I have a 2002 172 Cup, and i have a problem with my speedo.

Ive done the dashboard control check and all Needles work fine, ive had a mechanic who is a close friend just check a couple of bits over and said its all fine and he said to me it could be a sensor located underneath the induction kit attached to the gear box?


My speedo will be fine then all of a sudden just cuts out and my car surges forward a bit but still runs perfectly fine all other electrics are working perfectly just the needle on the speedo stops working.


Any help?

Yep sounds like what I had with my 02 non-Cup 172. Speedo was working intermittently, then as exactly as you described it would drop out and the car seemed to pick up a bit - then the needle would come back on again (although the time it took to come back on wasn't consistent).

New speedo sensor solved the problem, cheap and very easy to replace - just make sure that you put the metal heatshield that clips onto the sensor back on correctly.
