Split Rims. Whats the Point?

Hi, I know that the top end race spec wheels, along with expensive wheels are Split Rims. You can split the centre from the Rim etc.

But what is the point in this? What does it achieve?

It means you can alter the width and offset.

You can also just replace a barrel rather than the full wheel if it gets damaged.
