Spluttering like mofo AGAIN (Update; please read/help!)

Status
Not open for further replies.
After changing the coil pack (albeit for a second hand one) and the spark plugs, this solved the spluttering/misfiring problems with my car for quiet a while.

The other week, I changed the oil but couldn't get the filter off (rusted to feck) so had to just put new oil in with the filter left as it is. It's bang on the 'max' line on the dipstick now.

Every so often, my oil light and STOP light come on, but soon go away.

Not sure if the two are related but can anyone help?!

Sounds like this again now;

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

No problems starting, and it's had a new TDC sensor last year. Cheers for the reply though bud!

Forgot to add, it's a 1.2 16v too .

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

mmmm maybe dodgy coil pack again you could do with someone elses to try really, no engine light? the 182 exhaust fooled me

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

No lights on the dash apart from the oil one which keeps going on and off every so often (has been doing this for a few weeks with no spluttering, it's only just started) but could be unrelated. Might try someone elses coil pack or steal one from the scrappies ;)

Any other suggestions? When I tried the coil pack last time, it sorted it for a while then went mad again.

was the TDC sensor genuine Renault, including the new loom ?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Think i may have tried to help you last time round buddy...?

Anyway, what about the HT Leads that go into the coil pack these could be shagged

Also it could be a faulty injector? Have you had a diagnosed atall matey?!?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

The HT leads are built into the coil pack on 1.2s matey. Not had it diagnosed as it's only just started getting bad, and there's no lights on the dash. Is there a way to test for a dodgy injector?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Had mine at 2 seperate garages they changed everything and still the problem persisted, so they tried a new ecu and the problem went away lol what else can i say?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Engine management light starts flashing for a minute or two now, then goes off and comes back on. Spluttering so much it sounds like a Boxer engine. Thoughts?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Sure ive read somewhere on here, the 1.2's have a common problem of the wires around the ecu getting rubbed by the Ecu casing? May be way off the mark, im not sure tbh!

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

When mine sounded like this it was a dodgy injector. Birchdown unplugged each one and when we unplugged number 2 i think it was, the engine problem didnt change.

Check plugs and leads aswell?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

sounds like that nasty cough i had a few weeks back lol. take it to an exhaust place, might be a simple problem

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Wet coil pack? washed engine? or been through a big puddle? Ford?

Black box at back of engine rubbing wires, like said?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

The black box is fine, had that taped up a while ago. Where are the injectors? Can I test them myself?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

were any of the wires on the loom damaged, its a very common problem

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Only a bit, Renault taped them up for me and this was over a year ago. Could it still be that?

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

its possible i guess but would need looking at, if damaged those wires can cause all kinds of problems to show up, and many different fault codes to be logged aswell

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Cheers for the advice Brun.

Could this be one of the lambda sensors at all? Just a thought, I need a really quick (and cheap) fix! :(

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

what spark plugs did you put in, if it was bosch then thats probably the problem, i hear NGK are the best, and get those instead! If not Dynamo ? the perfomance ones from opi oils ..
Cheers

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

NGK sparkies are in. Don't think it could be them as I've only just changed them, and it's been fine up to now. Engine management light keeps coming on still, then going off but the spluttering is constant.

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

First thing i'd do is take it to a garage, get the wires comming form the ecu checked and get it put on the diognostics.

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Could be the oxygen sensor, know a lad that had this on a 1.2 and it was 'upstream oxygen sensor' - not cheap from Renault I'm afraid though mate.

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

Read in PFC mag that it could be something to do with the timing belt that's slipped out of place?

Any ideas whether it could be this or not? The engine has been sounding very 'tappity' recently before this happened, and when the engine's warm at idle it's proper jumpy constantly.

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

1.2 16v common problems i have had

plugs - you have changed them
wiring loom - if its the original renault item you are fooked (original has wires glued in a rubber like resin, renaults replacement-fix has wires in conduit)
injectors need to be cleaned - quite often blocked, we get ours serviced
theres a metal box on the back of the inlet manifold that protects the plugs on ecu, the box eats through the wiring loom and shorts it out, knocking off an injector and fecking the ecu

the ecu is expensive - have replaced one in past

Re: Spluttering like mofo AGAIN

when its spluttering, if its not putting fuel in it wont black a spark plug up, but you gotta have clean plugs to test this, other than that its just a caseof getting them serviced and cleaned. tbh i would say its the wiring loom have you checked it??? you can msn me a picture i can tell you if its original etc :D

Think the loom's okay Hutchie, will check it if this doesn't work though!

Update;

I took all the spark plugs out, they all looked fine apart form one that was covered in petrol. What is the problem and what do I need to replace?

Many thanks to all who have helped throughout this thread! :)

ignition somewhere, they wasted spark to its not coil. as that would be two wet plugs.. erm i would suggest leads but they part of coil... :S tried swapping plugs about see it its a dud plug???

Yep, I've tried putting one of my old plugs in and turned the engine on, sounded like an Impreza (pretty snazzy actually) and took it back out, was full of petrol.

its funny i have a 1.4 16v and i have the same smiliar problem, its started missfiring and chucking loads of smoke out the back, fixed this problem, but when moving the wrigin loom one way it would miss fire, move it back the other, and it would tick over fine... had engine managment light go on, then off then on again, its either when im on motorway or flooring it.... it runs ok, but somtimes i get a slight jerk, or missfire, the other day it startee spurting out whit smoke again and idling iraticly, then it sorted itself out again, and running fine again now... ive put it down to nothing mroe then dodgy wiring, a garage had told me it looks like its snagging at the back, but when i had an auto electrician look at it, he said he couldnt see anything wrong ? as i guess u can not buy a loom im tempted to strip the look back myself and have a look - its anoying problem

(oh 4got to mention, fault code on computer keeps coming up first injector, but have had that replaced)
