i did my 1.2 engine cover.

1. remove cover.

2. sand down vigorously, and then use washing up liquid mixed into water when wet n dry sanding it in order to clean it and make it nice and smooth.

3. plastic prime then sand.

4. plastic filler primer if there is any imperfections, then sand.

5. spray in colour of choice - lightly sanding inbetween.

6. lacquer

7. clip it back in - your done.

you should have something resembling this:

Dont sand between the colour coats, only when yoyu are done, rub it down with wet 2000 grit wet and dry and use a cutting compound.

Only need to laqure ifd its a metallic finish, if you laqure, dont rub the paint down unless you have an orange peal efgfect, then rub down and do another mist of base coat, and then laqure

I woudl defo have a spare one to do forst, chances are if its the first attempt you will f**k something up.

Also i dunno how hot 172 covers get, might be worth bearing it in mind

would this also be the process for bump strips? im thinking of painting mine black - so i dont have to use bloody wax/silicone whatever based spray to clean the stock bump strips.

thats true - i didnt read my post through

as for doing the bumpstrips its pretty much the same, just leave it for long enough to fully cure before fitting back onto the car. youll also need more coats to ensure its harder wearing.
