Squeal on start up

  172
hi all,

I have developed just this morning a squeal from start up on my 172? she was fine last night not a peep noise wise. (it was a spirited drive home)

started this morning and she died on first turn, then a little misfire with this noise? the misfire cleared itself but there is this constant squeal which increases with revs and goes over 4.5k RPM?

sounds like a belt slip type noise, but not? the belts have been done so should not be an issue?

any ideas? I did jet wash under the car on Sunday? but as said Monday and Sunday afternoon not an issue?

Any thoughts?

It sounds like that, however i used her for a good run and i don't think it rained last night? or that any water would have got in before this morning? also on the 20 min drive to work this morning I would have thought it would have dried out if it was water on the belt?

When were aux belt and tensioners last changed?

Mine was doing a slight squeak/ticking noise when cold, then when warm it would disappeared. Put new aux kit on and its fine now.

turned out the bottom Alternator bolt was missing and the top one had snapped! new Alternator and all should be fine.

Thanks for all your help.

have a look and see if the belt has moved? mine was due to the bottom bolt on the alt missing! if you take the driver headlight out you can move the tensioner to take the belt of and check everything. it may be you just need to tighten the Alt up on the bracket.
