Stalling in 2nd...

  Renault Clio 1.8 RSi

this has happened to me a couple of times now, i approach a turning in 3rd gear but as i go around the corner unless its down a hill i find theres not quite enough juice to accelerate away at a reasonable pace. so i change down to 2nd, drag the clutch up and go to plant my right foot, only to look down and see the dashboard looks like a christmas tree: its stalled. it then takes a couple of attempts to get it started again.

my theory is this: as the car is struggling to pull in 3rd, the revs are likely to be lower than idle (?), so when i press the clutch the revs take a little while to return to idle, then as the clutch comes up in 2nd, ..... (my theory runs out of steam here )

any ideas, guys? can anybody explain what is going on here, has it happened to you?!

cheers

i had same kinda prob with my RT , when i approached junctions i.e slowed down the car used to cut out ! and it wouldnt start for a few minutes,it turned out to be a faulty wire on the injector i think, but if u get it on a diagnostics machine theey can tell u whats wrong.

I used to have a problem with mine flooding badly if I didnt put enough revs on at junctions, it cleared up thankfully but its still an arse to hot-start if stalled... Do they all do this?

Why not try changing to 2nd before the corner and use engine braking to help slow down. Should also keep the revs up provided you dont slow down too much...

I do that anyway, do a lot of people engine brake? Whether its good or not (which it is!) it sounds quality with a de-cat and zorst... Lots of popping!

clio_racer: yes i almost always engine brake, a technique i have practised to perfection!!

pete: i wouldnt say my idle speed was erratic, far from it in fact.

as it goes, i tried to kill the engine today on a quiet road and it just wouldnt, i got down to about 8 mph in 3rd, with around 600rpm then dropped it into second and caned it off and it just picked up nicely :)

one of those things i guess.

Im currently driving my Mums Metro to get some experience before i get my Clio next month and it had exactly the same problem. It stalled in second gear. It was put down to a bloked fuel pipe, so whenever i started the car i had to pull the choke out to ge the fuel running so it wouldnt stall.

Rich_g85, you got the revs down to 600? How? Mine may on the odd occasion drop momenterly down to 600 but it never stays there. May drop down then imediatly come back up to at least 900rpm.

I have never had this problem, but you might want to check your idle control unit if you have one. Get the haynes out and look for it. I think the clio has one...it must do. Anyway you may need a new one cos it sounds like it might be sticking and not moving freely. You could clean it (if you can find it and get it off the car) or just get it checked over at a garage. But it definatly sounds like that to me, known it happen to a few cars, but never my clio.

Viceroy I have started taking roundabouts in second. It can be a bit dangerouse if you plant your foot.
