Starter motor?

Okay so got in the car today turned the key and nothing, not even an attempt at turning over. This first happened at 519 one day and Dan gave the starter motor a tap and all was good and this was quite a while ago now and all seemed fine until today and the exact same thing happened.

Luckily I remembered what Dan done so I did the same gave the big chunk of metal near the manifold a tap and turned the key and yup it started. So now my question is would it be a duff starter motor? Or is it possibly something else? Also what sort of money is it for a new motor? And is it a big job?

Sorry for the multiple question at the end lol. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Cheers mate I'll keep you in mind then, how much would you be asking?

Any idea how much they are new? Just I'd probably go to Dan to get it done and he doesn't like to fit second hand as he can't guarantee it. If there not that costly then I haven't got a problem going new.

This used to happen on my 1.2, when it first happened I called out my breakdown service, waited an hour, all for the bloke to come and tap the motor, and voila.

I don't think they're cheap, and some might suggest living with it, unless you've got the money spare I guess - it kinda goes away, can go months without a problem, the bloke told me there was probably plenty of life left in it - the car wasn't worth much so didn't get it changed, but guess if it's a 1*2 then it's worth it.

Cheers chaps, I could live with it but no doubt the inevitable failure would happen at the most inconvenient time lol. Hoping there not too expensive but its not the end of the world I guess considering what I have spent on it since buying it I'm sure it will just be pennies lol.

Sadly I don't have many contacts and any I do know that might be able to help I wouldn't really want them f**king about with it. I like to stick to the specialists on here just for piece of mind.

Well, a new starter, from a quick search around will cost you ~£150, although a lot more from Renault and then they quote 4 hours labour, although some have suggested you could probably do it in 2, but either way, so I'd say unless you've got contacts then expect it to cost £300 upwards

Ouch lol cheers for the help mate, I'll ring round a few places and see what prices I can get. That will be the lowering springs of the cards for now then :(.

Mine used to be more of a problem in the winter months, I assumed because of temperatures and moisture - I doubt it will completely fail on you, if money's tight it may be worth getting it done when summer is coming to an end, when you have a bit more cash saved, but then again, mechanical maintenance is more important than lows.

To give a real idea though, I'm probably making it sound worse than it is - it would literally happen like once or twice in 6 months, and then with a little tap it would be fine - so it's your decision.

Yeah I'll see how it goes and if it does it again at least I know what to do :)

This would be the second time since I have owned it from mid january. Massive thanks for the help though mate much appreciated.

Nice one mate if you can fit it that would be great, I'll give you a call in a few days to be sure you have got it and sort a date out. Is it a big job? Will be handy to head down and discuss a few other bits any way :).

Cheers mate, probably going to just get some sportlines fitted now too so will probably get that done at the same time as getting this sorted.

Right been speaking to a chap today and he said if there's no sound like a click or anything then its more likely to be starter motor solenoid. What would this mean with the clio then?

Would still mean the whole unit would need replacing.

If it is just the starter (which it sounds like) you can just bump start it for the time being. I managed to get it down to a fine art a few years ago with the Cup when the starter motor started failing in that. lol

Ahh okay mate cheers. Yeah haven't tried bump starting yet I'd imagine that would be hard work if I'm on my own too plus my street is up hill so I'd never get the momentum to get it rolling jump in and bump it on my own haha.

Yesterday tapping the motor wouldn't work on it's own and I ended up needing a chap at work to tap it while I turn the key. Got home tried starting it again and wouldn't want to know so got a big lump of metal out and was giving it the motor a good ash eventually it started and it seems okay again now but need to get it done before it fully packs in on me lol.

Also I tried rocking it in gear with no luck but while doing this I noticed the engine moves quite a bit is this quite normal?.

Yeahhh they just deteriorate and get worse and worse once they start failing. As for bumping it on your own, yeah it's not easy but a good work out if nothing else haha.

Had exact same problem with mine only when the car was warm. Changed TDC sensor, earth loom and starter motor. Worked great for a day then dead as a doornail. Took it to Rentech and Mike sussed out it was the wiring loom to the starter motor was really corroded. He replaced the loom and I haven't looked back since.

Hmm did tapping your starter motor work for you? As it does work for me just yesterday it wasn't working straight away.

It'll be getting done by a specialist any way so I'm sure they will notice if its that. Cheers.
