starting problem

ok heres the problem, car was running fine, started it one day sat waiting outside a shop for a mate, it cuts out, no stuttering or sign of fuel starvation, just dead, wouldnt start again, checked and it wasnt firing

replaced, plugs, dizzy, rotor arm, crank angle sensor and coil. didnt get leads cos i needed the car that day and they couldnt get them in, anyway, did all this and it ran again, been ok for a week, done near 500 miles since, then today, the same thing happens again...

gonna change the leads tomorrow as they are the last thing i havent changed, even though they look fine, but if this doesnt sort it, any ideas? its a valver, but with a willy engine, which i dropped in a month or so ago now. 1992 k reg, engine is from an m reg willy. car doesnt have an imobiliser or trick alarm, just standard stuff.

The only bit i havent replaced, apart from the leads, is the amplifier, as in the bit behind the coil, which i suspect could be dodgy cos my rev meter doesnt work, but that never has...its really pissing me off because i need my car to get to work and what not.

no one got any ideas then? could it be a problem with realys? i hate car electrics

ok just been out to the car, started it, it started, was idling fine for about 30 seconds, then just died, all of a sudden, heard something click in the engine bay (i was standing over the battery side) but couldnt tell what it was, then wouldnt start again.

someone must have some ideas?!?

not that i know of, nothing out of the ordinary, do they have an alarm as standard? i take it there is no imobiliser as standard?

i always wondered what that key was for, is it always on then? and if i turn the key will it go off? there is also a lock for a small key just next to where the fuse box is in the engine bay, whats that for? i think my other valver has the same so dont think its a non standard part..

If its starting then just the revs just drop down to 0 and it dies with no warning it sounds like your ISCV is faulty and needs replacing tbh. That would cause it not to idle properly like you're describing then the revs would just drop down to 0 and obv it dies. Don't know why it wouldnt start after? Is it clicking when you try and start it? That would point to a faulty starter motor.

cheers for the tips, iscv is ok, only replaced it a little while ago. think i found out what it was, seems the ecu was wet, the tray it sits in was upside down and water had got in, should have thought this, as both times its done it, the car had got wet, once after i washed it, and another after a heavy thunder storm yesterday!

i also changed the HT leads, so could be those, but its all working well again now, so im relieved! hopefully this thread might help someone else out one day!
