Steering feeling funny when turning.....

  S2 106 GTI
Only really fully noticed this the other day but when Turning slowly on full lock, the wheels seem to 'jump' and the steering feels very weird?! like loose/not attached....

any body else have this? I wondered if it was down to worn bush's etc....

I bought my 182 last January when it was often frosty/icey in the morning and noticed this; they don't like turning shaply when the ground is like this as they feel wierd/juddery/skiddy. It's been really bad recently with the snow, it pushes on at crawling pace if you're turning with a lot of lock on.

It is apparently normal and due to the geometry of the front suspension.

Like as if you go over a grid?

^ I felt a similar sensation (like going over a cattle grid) when I was test driving a 172 last year. I assumed it was the result of an undeclared-in-the-advert 'light knock' to the n/s wing that had been repaired.

:S

Maybe wrongly I gave that car a wide berth!

Yes mine does that to.

I did a search on this forum and apparently its normal. Although some people say it has something to do with the top mounts? I can live with it as the only time i'm at full lock is when i'm parking.

Hard to discribe...but when you turn normal there is some resistance, but when you turn on full lock - like you are wanting to park somewhere the steering goes very light on full lock as if its not attached, and the wheels seem to judder (like your trying to make the car go in a straight line but with the wheel turned - so there jumping) I thought it was down to the width of the tires ect.... used to do it in my LCR

Right well there's two things being described in the thread. The "when it goes extra light" on full lock is normal. My 172 and 182 does it. The sort of slipping when on a cattle grid is also normal as again my 172, 182 and even wifes punto does this.

As I said its hard to describe! maybe down to tires or warn joint/bush somewhere I don't know? Just thought i'd post up to see if anyone else has/feels the same experience.
