Stop being insured = loosing no claims?

  Clio mk1
I have been driving for 1yr and a half but when I go to Uni in september I don't really want to keep paying insurance all year just the months when I am back.

So if I stop insuring will I lose my 2 years ncb (if I still have it) I am with Adrian Flux atm.

Cheers

I did a search on google, look at the first result when you type in...

"Do you lose your"

Made me laugh

Yes you can insure a car for a month etc, But for that to happen you will need a parent etc as the main driver, then Add you as a aditional person. Now theres a limit for this tho some insurance will do 1 month, and other 3(month to month basis) But you will still have the No claims you had but wont gain anymore..

If you have not had an active policy in the last 2 years, you will lose any NCB you have built up.

The difference between insuring with 2 years NCB and 0 years NCB is going to be big unfortunately.

You would have to insure the car on a full 12 month policy to keep the NCB running.

:S

You only gain NCB if you run a policy for a full 12 months in your own name. Insuring the car for a month under your parent's policy is not going to help in this situation.

I will be at uni for maybe 3-4 years.

So lets say on average I will pay £600 a year in insurance, paying £800 on my own policy (1.2 clio)

=£2400

When I come out I will be 23, so I can be 23 with 6 years ncb and -£2400 or 23 with no claims bonus (would insurance cost a lot?)

Ye i kno, but he wants cover for some months he is going to use it, so i suggested the above, so if he wants the car form tommorow for a month he could phone his parents up they add him up then job done. as iv been doing it for the past 6months on my dads insurance

It is hard to tell you what to do but what I can tell you is that the difference between having NCB and have 0 NCB is big.

Some companies will offer discoutns based on claim free named driver experience so it could be an idea to add yourself as a named driver on a parents policy etc just so that you can show you have been named on anactive insurance policy. You NCB will still be lost though. It would not be cost effecive to keep a policy running for 3-4 ywears just to jkeep your NCB.

What about if you carry on paying for this year so that you build up 2NCB and then after 2 years get a months policy on something so as to not loose your NCB.

Would that work?

Bring you car to uni if you can afford to, i didn't in my first year and missed it so much, now I have bought another car and back at uni and its awesome!

Hmmm, I am going to pay right up until september so I will have 2 ncb but I spent £1200 last year and £800 this year on insurance just seems like a waste.

What about if once this policy expires, go for just under 2 years without insurance, then in your third year insure the car (the extra age should make this the cheapest year to insure I'd assume). Hopefully get another NCB, and get insurance when you finish uni, therfore only paying for one year and keeping NCB.

Also maybe just use an insurance site like elephant, just to gauge a rough difference on insurance between 23 and 0NCB and 23 and 3NCB. Also, if your car isn't insured it'd have to be kept on a driveway I think, ie. off the public road, and you wouldn't get a penny if it was stolen/caught fire. Maybe 3rd party insurance might be an idea, depends on the value of your car, but of course you'd lose your NCB if you did claim for theft/fire.

Could you not buy a chinquechenko thingy, will cost peanuts to insure. Keep it insured while your at uni, TPO and just keep it off road. Then when you finish you will have loads of NCB and it wont have cost much. Can probably pick one up for £100 if you try hard enough.

This is what i would do, Put the Car on a limited mileage policy aswell, Just to keep the NCB ticking over. ;)

Well I have a garage at my mums house, so I could keep it in there whilst I am at uni. A 1.2 97 clio is very low insurance anyway and its on 53k miles and almost no problems so would be stupid to get rid off.

Am I allowed to insure the car for a year 2 years into uni and keep my no-claims? As its a good idea ;)
