Stripped out- handling

  rps13
Not a topic i've seen mentioned but i know alot of us have stripped out cars,

now mine has nothing at all in the back and there's a noticable difference in weight distribution from the standard car.

this combined with poor quality apex springs makes the handling somewhat confidence demeaning in comparison to the standard car, which point to point was probably quicker due to said confidence.

will coilovers setup properly even out this weight imbalance?

or is it a case of losing some weight from the front of the car too? (front seats, battery etc)

has anyone had similiar problems ? markcup?

how did you get around this?

i have been speaking to a company who specialise in chassis development and setup, they were thinking about possibly ballasting the rear to balance the car.

hmmmmmmmm

adding weight? surely putting a spare wheel in and relocating the battery would do it?

ideally want to avoid adding weight to the car though

i know what you mean, but i think this would be a bit more precise than that, ie. on the scales.

it wasn't a definate plan, but they have setup some cars where they have found time round a track by adding weight to certain areas.

Battery in the back worked very well for me just having that extra bit of weight above the rear axle!

i can imagine that working tbh Howser. Stripped out cars can be a bit of a handful to drive hard. from being 17 everycar i have owned has been stripped and put onto a weight loss program. two of them have had cages nova and xsara and they seemed to handle better with the extra weight obv stiffening the chassis at the same time would improve this. I've also found jumping from my williams which was stripped to the 172 with interior it seems to corner better and i feel a lot more confident in throwing it into a corner and it seems to stick a lil better outright performance it feels slower but straight lines are no fun now are they :D

This time, im going to try and save some weight but in a different way...

You have Apex springs. I don't. Mine sits high enough for a party in the wheel arch.

It's always been happy at the back, can't say I noticed any real difference when I stripped it.

i stand by the fact that having an lpg tank in the rear give your bags of confidence mid corner :D

lol cheers for the plug dave but i have one.

and awesome tyres on the back.

it's not the back breaking free it just causes the car to lurch

you need to get the car corner weighted.

this actually means- using the coilover(i hope you have coilovers) raise or lower the height of the car corner. eg if i wanted to put 70kg on the drivers side i would lower that side to put more weight on that side, it is very important to do this with you in the car as your weight needed for the car to be correctly balanced.

once you have gotten to the point when you can balance it any more then move batterys etc etc....

yeah if you read my original post it says i dont have coilovers.

dont really want them either.

anyone found springs lower than 40mm for a 172?

I dropped my rear tyre pressure to 30psi (from 31) and run 33 in the front, seems to have helped a little. I'm running coilovers and find the back end a little happy, but it's very neutral so I don't really find it a handful at all.

aim for 30psi hot on the rear (so about 27 cold) and around 32psi hot on the front

i find that works for me

im running 30 front 28 rear and it sticks, only ever had the rear to come out 1's, 60 into a round about in the damp and grease locking up all over the place... only thing to do was drop it into 2nd and floor it lol... apparently it looked really cool

coilovers will help but if you read "corner weighting" .the weight from the rear of the car you have removed will be f*ck all compared to the overall balance.

if you are comitted to balancing the car coilovers dont need to be super low and rigid.
