Subframe conversion..

Hi all. I have a Renault Clio 1.2 16V (2001) and Iv'e started to make it a replica of a Renaultsport Clio.

I now want to convert the subframe, brakes, suspension...etc. And I know somebody breaking a Sport.
Can somebody throw a quick list up of what I'd need?

Iv'e spend a lot of time and money on this car and have been considering upgrading to a 1*2 but cannot justify the extra running, maintenance or insurance costs so that's not an option.

Thanks in advance :)
Cory.

Just to eliminate any posts about it, I do not want a 2.0 engine. My 1.2 is staying.

chances are maintenance and insurance will be higher than buying a 1*2, and you will probably spend enough money to buy one as well. thought about doing this myself before then realised selling my 1.2 and getting a 172 was the best option, not looked back yet!

unless your leaving out the engine??

I dont think you need the subframe? i think its only the cup that is different in that respect? but hopefully someone else can confirm.

The suspension though you need:
both struts, complete with shocks (different bolt spacing) and brake calipers/disks
both wishbones and the ARB
both driveshafts, these will fit your box fine

Rack wise you should just about be ok, but check that you have a sensible number of threads going into the track rod end. any dramas and you will need the RS tie rods and ends

Just buy a 172.

Then he has the hassle of fitting the 1.2 engine to it that he wants though, which including all the loom and ecu etc is no doubt a bit of a ballache considering he has a car that he already likes and only needs to spend an afternoon on it to sort the front end out?

The only change is going to be insurance, which if insuring a modified 1.2, I would bet wouldn't be much different on a standard 172. ;)

Economy etc is no worse.

Not sure of the gearbox/engineblock set up on a 1.2 but it should be fairly similar.

Quick note on ABS. If you have 44 tooth ABS you will need to get rear sensors from renault from a clio 1.6 which doesn't have esp and also swap the plugs around (left to right and right to left). I didn't have this problem and have 26 tooth abs. If you also have that you will need to change the ABS rings on the driveshafts and rear discs. Couple of quid each from J&R CV.

Subframe, topmounts, flexible brake lines, track rods and ends, can all be carried over from your existing set up

Parts needed
wishbones
hubs
172 cup driveshafts (if you have the same gearbox as a dci)
discs and pads
calipers
anti roll bar
struts and springs

Front gearbox mount is optional and you will need the bracket from the gearbox and the rubber mount (see page 11 or something in my thread)

For the rear you just need the complete beam.

Of course mine is a DCI but I've done a guide

In my project thread it starts getting meaty on page 5

Chip, you've sorted the gearbox query! Does the 1.2 have a place to mount the central o/s driveshaft bearing carrier. My DCI didn't and hence I had to get a 172 cup shaft (no bearing carrier)

If I'd put that much work into a car, chopping it in to just get a 172 wouldn't even enter my head ! :D

Good point on the carrier, not actually sure, but I was just assuming it would be a ph1 donor, but these days a ph2 is probably starting to get more common, in which case he will need to check that out.

Ph1 shaft will fit and doesnt need that though.

True, forgot about the ph1 shafts

Cory I think between all that you've got all the info you need to sort that out.

If you chuck second hand stuff on I'd expect it to cost you around £300.

@Chip-mk1 & @GrahamS , I cannot thank you guys enough!

The donor car is a 172 ph2 btw :) I've been quoted all the above parts for around £150, and their local :approve:

@Budgie , I do not want a 172. I'm happy with the car I have.
I just want to have better handling and braking; the way people point people looking do upgrade 1.2 don't they?

Only thing I can mention is don't you have the regular non sport front wings? So the track would be too wide for them

Ah fairs always thought you modified your front bumper. I have 25mm spacers for my replica they look spot on but I would like to do the subframe conversion
