swapping cars with a private reg

Hi all..

Im thinking about swapping my renault clio for a honda civic but the guy with the civic has a private registration on the car.

we are not sure how to go about swapping and what to do with the reg plates... we basically want to get the sale over and done with as his insurance is about to run out and mine is ludicrously expensive and dont know best way to go about this?

Could he apply for the old reg to be put on the civic and the new reg to be put on mine?

any help much appreciates

If he wants to keep it and not give it to you he will need to put it on retention which will take time (post) unless he physically goes to the dvla office to do it in person.

He should be aware of the process if he put it on the civic in the first place. Oh and there will be a £105 charge for him to pay to remove it from the civic

Fill out a V317 and enclose a cheque and send it off with his V5 filled out with your new details. That way he gets the reg back in the post and you get a new v5 with the old reg.

couldnt he swap the plate from the civic to my car? or would it have to go on retention... and then put onto mine? how much would that cost? thanks

adam, can all that be done on the day.. i mean i will need to drive his car so will i need to insure it on the priv reg til its gone through?
