Tappety, with piper cams.

  impreza
Hi there, I am very new to the whole french car scene with most of my cars coming from the vag gropup so i have alot to learn.
Firstly, i have a 52 plate 172 with 40k on the clock. The previous owner carried out some performance mods on my car. Mods that i know of are piper cams, superchipped, 182 exhaust mani with de cat and koni adjustables all round.

The problem i have is what i think is a very tappety engine. You cant hear it within the car but from outside it sounds like an old fiesta. lol. The nosie seems to get faster with the revs. I have taken it to a garage and they wont even listen to it for less than an hours charge. I know the engine has got 10w 40 part syn in at the moment but i will be changing that tomorrow. Im planning to go to nurburgring in may and i want to know that the engine is sound before i go. Some people have said that it could be that cams with a higher lift being harsher on the tappets.

Any in will be greatly appreceited.

a lot of people say the piper cams are noisy on the clios.

iirc, they are regrinds. probably perfectly fine though.

The Piper's are re-grinds and are well known for tapping fella. You need some Billet cams from either Cat cams or Shrick.

Im not too sure on the ins and outs of the Piper Cams - but you can generally expect some noise from upgraded Cams. I personally run a set of Cat Cams (428) in mine and when warm you can hear them working on idle if the sound is really irregular or beginning to worry you run it down to one of the recommended Renault Specialists K-Tec, Angelworks etc etc... im sure they'll listen and tell you if its right or wrong.

piper cams do tend to make a bit of noise, it's the lifters reaching their maximum. It's not a problem to the running of the car, but it does annoy somme people. We fit Catcams for this reason as it's not worth the hastle of changing if they're noisy. Piper cams do work just fine though

Thanks ppl, kinda put my mind at ease now,
Are the piper cams putting too much stress on the lifters?? could the oil quieten this down??

yes if they are re-grinds they will stress the valvetrain more than cams which are ground from a full cast or billet.

So what would be a solution. Why would they design cams that are bad for the engine?? Would th epower loss be noticeable if i went back to standard??

they havnt deisgned them, thats the problem.

They have altered the profile to increase lift, by removing material from the BCD. In doing so they increase accleration of the valve, and so all associated loadings. They are harsh on followers etc,

The only real solution is to use cams ground from a blank, whether that be a billet or cast balnk.

and put in a FULL synth nice expensive oil ! Thread not far from yours to read up on oilchoice

I wouldn't worry. F4R's are noisy engines. The Piper cams will exacerbate it. If you really want to change them then change them if/when the lifters begin to fail.

Cheers
