tapping on start up?

  Sunshine Bus ph-quick
Is this 'normal' valver behaviour?

Is got an annoying little tap when the engine is cold & it goes when I've warmed the engine/oil up.

Is it possible it needs the tappets adjusting maybe, or is this normal cold valver idle behaviour?
Have it booked into have the belt done, so will get them to listen then, but wondered in the meantime!

No, I've not broken it before the haters start ;)

Ok.

Valvers DO tap. It's a sign of a good valver engine when they don't tap too much tbh. The way to fix it or limit it, is to get new tappets put into the head. As the cam turns and pushes on the tappet, the cam and the tappet wear, and wear too much if there is no oil. The only way to gaurantee to get it sounding better is to replace cams and tappets.

There is no real disadvantage to having worn tappets. The only thing to mention is a negledgable reduction in valve opening.

You may be able to reduce the noise by changing the oil, but thats only if the oil in it is really old, or bad, or the wrong grade.

Lovely cars, how you enjoying it? Sound good don't they :)

Tappets are a pain in the ass to do on them, I think they are hydraulic too.
What oil is in it ?? If the dude was running it on castol gtx magnatec, get it changed. Valvers hate that oil & sound like a bag of spanners on start up when cold. Oil should be 10w 40 iirc.

agreed. Don't use magnetec, it's awful and runs too hot.

They are hyraulic tappets (which is not a bad design). Hydro tappets are simple and reliable. The roller rocker typre tappets in the F4R engines are quieter, but not a classically reliable design (although F4Rs are not known for top end failure).

I have a spare head for a valver if you want to take it away, make it mint, and then put it on.

I have no idea what oil is in it, just that its full lol. Will have a look at how manky it is & give it a change if its rough looking.
What does 10w 40 mean as a matter of interest? (I know it'll say it on the container- I'm just curious)

It doesn't bother me that she does tap to be honest, can't hear it when I'm driving & it is only when i kick it up & its getting warm so at least i know I'm not ragging it about from cold.
She is awesome! I've done pushing 200 miles going nowhere in particular in the past 3 days & really enjoying driving her.
Really looking forward to getting more used to the difference in drive & enjoying myself a bit more in her.

Shes got an aftermarket centre section & tail pipe section on her so sounds rather nice :) & she pops which is a big grin factor (I'm such a child!)

F4R? Sorry? lol

my old valver tapped when cold mate and the engine was a solid as they get , dissapeared when it warmed up tho, does yours go away?, also remember the solinoids on the injectors tick ( in 99% of valvers;) ) that also might be adding to the noise

10w40 describes the viscosity of oil at certain temps.
f4r is the 1*2 engine.

dotn worry about it,a min of tapping from cold is fine, near enough every valver (including all of mine and one was on 160k) have all tapped and they have been fine

Your lucky yours goes away when it's warm, mines terrible for tapping when cold. But it does nestle down quite a bit when it's warm, thinking of getting the tappets changed myself. I don't think it has any effect on the way the engine performs at all, mines still reliable, fast as stink and I love it.
