Temperature gauge not working

To cut a long story short, I had the dash out, including the clocks.

When it was all back together and the car running the temperature gauge goes straight to the middle of the dial and stays there, even when the car is left running until the fan kicks in, the gauge doesn’t move from the middle of the dial.

But when the ignition is switched off it does drop back down like all the rest

thought that was normal?
how can this be normal, isnt the gauge suppose to go from the bottom the dial and grandually rise as the temperature rise in the engine, thats how the gauge the temperature of your car isnt it?
and if its left running the dial should rise until the fan starts and cools the engine down, which also causes the gauge to drop.
if the gauge doesnt move how are you ment to monitor the your temperature?????

so it instantly jumps to the middle.???
mine gets to the middle after about 3min of idle. and stays there.

well as the engine was warm, im unsure if it would jump to the middle when cool (i will go out now whiles it cold and see what happens)]
but surely it should rise the hotter the car gets?
and when the fan kicks in, should this cause it to drop while the fan cools the engine down?

i must add, im not familar with the workings or running of a clio as ive never had 1, and the 1 ive got now has been off the road since i got it 12 month ago, and its soon to be back on the road.

mine rises to the middle and stays there even if the fan comes on. if i come back after 20-30 min, it is about a 1/4 of the way up the gauge.

im pretty sure that is what supposed to happen. (in clio's anyway)

yours seems fine to me

ps. i have never seen mine get past the middle part. even when thrashing it.
