The 36k question!

  RenaultSport clio 182 cup
Right my 182 is due the 36k service, i have done alot of investigation on this due to the AUX belt! I have phoned about 4 dealers and they say no, Aux belt does not need changing , even when i push to have it done. Also i have phoned renault help line and they agree. The only place i have heard about changing this is on this site, at the end of they day renault sign the book and have the warrenty so does it matter?

In the Renault service book ( page 14 ) it says 36k miles or 5 years .Show that to the dealer .

Its should be chnaged the old rules said it wasn't but there were to many failures and it became a part of the service rules.

Few dealers are aware of the chnage.

Get it done else it breaks and when it does 99.9% of the time it takes out the cambelt and your lookiung least £1k on a good rates for fixing it.

Just read the god damn service book mate. On page 8 of my service book it says

"accessories belt - petrol and diesel engines every 72,000 miles or 5 years except: Clio 2.0 16v Renault Sport: every 36,000 miles or 5 years."

It's there in black and white.

To be honest only my local RTE pointed it out, it's very easy for them to miss as it is actually a foot note at the bottom of a servicing interval poster they put on their wall.

Get the garage to take a look at the footnotes

stealers are clueless told me the same thing when I wanted to book mine in for its 36k service.

How can anyone trust them to carry out a comprehensive service if they can't even get the sevice schedule right.

I will never let stealer touch my car far better service from a small independent french car specialist.

Just had a quote of sevenoaks dealership , £240 for service, £220 for aux belt !!!!!!!!! I think i might give that a miss!

I'm only about 1/2 hr from Sevenoaks and went to Haywards in Medway. Charged about £220 for the service and £100 for the Aux belt.

If you call them speak to Sandra (back from hols on 11th) as she is in charge of servicing.

Hope that helps

How difficult is it to change an Aux belt Fred, I'm guessing a few hours work, is it worth changing the cambelt at the same time if they are similarly located and (stuff) has to be removed?

I loved the days on my old ohv rwd ford where it took less then 5 minutes to swap, I just loosen two bolts on the alternator take off the tension and slip a belt on and take up to 2 fingers worth of tension, then tighten, job done.
I did this on the side of the road once when mine snapped.

Mike @ Rentech gave me the following quotes for my 172 Cup :

If your cup has air conditioning then its £250 all inclusive.
If your cup has no air conditioning then its £175 all inclusive.

Bargain !! I'm coming up to 36K so will definitely be heading down to Rentech

One good reason not to have AC!

Infact I'd forfeit power steeing, power windows, sunroof and anything else which is a luxury and adds weight, if I was given a choice when I bought the clio (that dosent mean I want them all to stop working now I got them though!).

I dont know about Aux belt prices but Platinum Renault are doing Cambelt's from £249.99 at the mo.

Aux belt is 2.1 hour work the cambelts 5.1hours. AUX has to come off to do cambelt but cambelts are a pain.

You need a speail tool realy to do the belts don't bother doing either aux or cambelt unless you have the tools and have done them before.

so who has had a AUX belt failure ? this seems to me to be a forum myth!

Loads have had them fail the rules used to say it was chnaged with the cambelt but there were so many failures it was chnaged they do fail loads.

So just to check is the idea to do both aux & cam belts in one go for best cost & peace of mind situation then peeps ?

Yep, i went to Rentech for my 36k + Aux belt last year and it came to £160 all inclusive (slightly cheaper than quote above as i have an ITG filter fitted)

Cant beat mikes for servicing - ive been there 2 years running now even though it is a 250 mile round trip... just make a day of it.

I think there is some confusion on here as to the difference between a cam belt and an accessories belt.

If your accessories belt goes, you lose power to engine driven accessories like air con and power steering. As long as you don't drive off the road without your power steering and crash, the effect won't cause any damage to your car (replace every 36k miles or 5 years, which ever is sooner)

If your cam belt goes, your valves go out of timing with the pistons and they collide, seriously f**king up the internal gubbins of your engine and leaving you with a very costly engine rebuild (replace every 72k miles or 5 years, which ever is sooner)

I'll happily stand corrected if a pro has better advice, but this is what I've come to interpret the state of play as with regards to your belts.

I thought if the Aux belt broke it could take out the Cambelt?

IMO

If you cars at 36k and ages of 4 years old then just get the aux belt done

If your near 60k or 4 years then get the whole lot done IMO.

If the aux belt brakes it takes out the cambelt most of the time but your right in theory the only problem is the aux belt powers the coolent pump so if the aux belt did brake and didn't take out the cambelt then very quickyl your have a head gasget failed how long depends on loads of thing sbut the heavy power stearing (since it would no longer be powered would make you pull over and realsie that theres an issue also the electrical warning light would come on as the alernator isn't being spun)
I thought if the Aux belt broke it could take out the Cambelt?

99.9% of the time if the aux belt brakes the bit get into the cambelt working and take the cambelt out so there goes your valves and you've a big bill to fix.

Ren tech will do aux belt plus service for £250 or for £300 you can have AUX, CAM, bearings and service done ! Not bad at all

just been looking in my 182 service manual and i cant see anywhere where it says on 36k the aux belt needs replacing, someone said it was on page 8 but in mine theres not mention of it.

il be getting mine done at this millage but just seems strange that it doesnt make it clear in the manual that this needs doing.

Look in the section that lists the supplementary servicing requirements. I think it's the same bit that tells you the spark plugs need changing at 72k miles.

  Megane
if aux belt snaps it can get wrapped round the crank pully go in the cambelt area and snap the cambelt well worth getting it done had a renault laguna this happened to luckly it did not snap the cambelt but because parts of the belt got in the cambelt area we had to strip it down to get them out so changed cambelt anyway.

250 service and aux belt

300 service and aux belt kit

  53 plate 172
I have a 53 172 just coming up to it's 4th birthday so it's due it's 24,000 service. The actual mileage is 13,000.

If I just go for the normal service will I have to go back next year for another service plus aux and cam change or can I just have the belts changed?

Thanks
