Hi Everyone,
My girlfriend has just recently started up photography, She does some great shots but she struggles to get a good picture of sunrises/sunsets.

Her question is how do you take a good picture of a sunrise/sunset without so much light and dark in the picture?

Exposure i.e. 1/60th + play with aperture. Try it with 5,6 then 11 and see which is better. Use a tripod. Thats it. You might want to turn the ISO a bit bigger since there is not as much light as at midday.

Try shooting RAW too which gives you some more options when you bring the photos in for editing.

She is using an Olympus SP-590UZ. With the 1/60th is this the exposure or the shutter speed?

both...kinda.

It's the shutter speed, but that effects the exposure. The longer the shutter is open the more light is let in so the exposure is increased.
