The PS3: 24 things you need to know

Xbox are responding with a 1080p update...

Next gen consoles... Pah, XBox can't run decent games without overheating (for those of you who haven't experienced such issues... YOUR TIME WILL COME!!!), and PS3 is same old Sony apart from the fact it'll cost a bit more this time.

How many people have a 1080p display though? 99% of HD panels will scale it to 720 anyway, as 99% of resonably priced panels don't do native 1080.

i have a 1080p display ;]

sounds a bit sony pro...but i don't doubt it'll be a good console. it'll just be about the games...prob end up with both anyway.

Not too much, Sony 40" W series. full 1080p resolution, think i'ts 2k in the shops.

doesn't do all the formats? what dya mean mate? is there not like only one? i'm clearly naive!

i'm not a sony fanboy but this one is tv of year in the new whathifi vision and sound awards...can't be bad.

well at 1080p you have 24,25,30,50 and 60 Hz i cant rememeber what one the sony cant do tho i was reading about it on avforum

I think the HDTV broadcast (in the US at least) standard only supports 1080p24 & 1080p30, not 50 or 60. I'm not entirely sure, and I don't know if that includes Blue Ray & HDDVD.

well the tv has full blu ray support. not sure where i'd get the specs for it if i can't find it on the sony website, i'm sure it'll look good on it though whatever the hz

its why most cars just say petrol or derv most people dont want to know or need to know

You've lost me there to be honest.

if you knew anything about hdtv standards you would realise what it was all about

......which i don't, which is why i was wrong! Thank you ever so much for correcting me.

I just turn my HD TV on, watch DVD's on my Upscaler, it looks good. I smile and eat popcorn.

right the 24 25 30 etc all relates to the framerates they are able to display

pal is 25 frames per second and ntsc is 24 or 30

film is usually filmed in 24 fps

only games for the forseeable future (even they might not) will use 50 and 60hz as it would cost too much to change all the movie making kit to 50 and 60

As I understand it, games can already do 720p60, but 1080p60 seems a bit of an oddball due to the huge bandwidth of broadcasting it...not really sure how that effects games though...

yup roy your right they do 720p50 and 60 now but as you say the bandwidth required not to mention processing power is huge let alone file sizes and time to actually make textures that detailed etc

Not all games will be 1080p
Although the hardware is certainly capable of delivering 1080p at 60 frames per second, certain titles will not reach this destination. In some cases, it's a matter of not having enough time or resources before launch to include the feature. In other cases, the game is so visually complex that ensuring 60 FPS 1080p might be more trouble than it's worth. We were informed that Resistance: Fall of Man maxes out at 720p -- but this is understandable in light of its ambitious multiplayer. The game uses some pretty advanced physics calculations that require a ton of horsepower. Motorstorm also does not support 1080p and requires some serious calculation for its crash sequences, if appearances are any indication.

thats taken from that link on page 1

if you read it it says that its too much hard work for developers to actually make them at that resolution + who knows maybe the ps3 may just melt if you actually tried to get it to do that much work lol

i thought ps3 was supposed to be able to do 1080p at full 60 frames a second though? since my tv is fully compaitble with that, should be fine surely.

it was supposed to have 2 hdmi's aswell and support for 8 pads lol

it will be fine there will be no quality difference between 1080i and 1080p anyway untill you get to the full 50 and 60 hz

just because it says it can doesnt mean it ever will ;) welcome to the world of sony marketing

haha believe me i know exactly what you mean. i nearly bought the 56 X series if it wasn't for the fact they're nearly the same but loads more cash.

The best bet is to just build a gaming PC that you aren't stuck with and have an upgrade path whenever you feel the need, rather than falling for the "next gen" marketing campaigns every 5 years ;)

i like the bit about 1080p support

erm it will do it but no one will actually write anything for it lol
won't it be support for Bluray movies though anyway as I was sure I heard all bluray movie discs will contain 1080p res?

Not gonna jump in with the HDTV thing its all been said lol. Apart from one thing im sure if blu ray does win the xbx can be fairly easily upgraded to support it as an aftermarket thing. Only requires a driver update via live and then the hardware. The codec is microsofts anyway so sony still have to pay MS for bluray support so it doesnt matter who wins and what you buy your money is still partly going to microsoft. Something for the fanboys to know.

But that comment i think is brilliant i remember how crap my playstation was at launch and how often it liked to crash. My 360 was on the other day for 8 hours straight didnt crash once. i would be playing a game then just walk away and leave it go make dinner go for a walk to the shops etc and just leave it on. Works fine. Same as my current playstation does.

All first revision systems are crap. Its the same with PC's mobile phones etc. So many bugs that cant be tested in a lab have ot be tested partly on the public only way to find out what happens on a larger scale.

Why i always wait a few months before i buy any new piece of technology. Cars are exactly the same. New models usually recieve loads of recalls for various things. Such as the merc A class used to like flipping its self over. My clio was recalled on a suspension issue when i first got it.
